Biking along the Erie Canal

After reading another post about traveling in upstate New York, I'm starting a new thread for those of you that have biked the Erie Canal Rail to Trail or live in the area.

We are headed there from Kentucky in mid August and although we have studied the maps and "read the book", it is difficult to know where to start. First, we don't like riding on the city parts so mark those sections off, small towns are okay and good for ice cream stops Second, safety is always an issue on a trail.

Can you advise the most scenic areas and perhaps state parks or campgrounds along the way. We are allowing 3-4 weeks. We will be stationary for a few days and ride perhaps in both directions and then move to another area. We are not towing.

I grew up in Troy, NY, across the river from Waterford, where the Erie Canal meets the Hudson River. We grew up biking along it, but never very far. I'm afraid I have excellent memories of picnic lunches watching the boats go through, but no idea of campgrounds etc along the way.

This would definitely be a place to ride and enjoy!

Can't wait to hear how it works out for you!!!!
