Billings to St. Mary, MT

Taking our 5er from Iowa to East Glacier, but want info on segment from Billings to East Glacier on our final day. Our TV is an 8 liter Chev and gas mileage is terrible (< 8 mpg), towing a 34' 5er. What is best route, cross country or stick to Interstate? Thanks in advance.

If your stuck with the small fuel tank in your P/U , I'd stick to the interstate, more fuel stops available. You'll be climbing constantly so mileage will be worse.
Once in East Glacier , DO NOT under any circumstances go on #49 towing .
Don't ask how I know this.

Hi pigdoc,
I stay at the KOA in St. Mary. Been this way many times. East Glacier is a bit different than St. Mary. This is for St. Mary. Consider:
1. I 15 North to Exit 226 Route 287 North
2. Route 287 North to Route 89 North (Choteau)
3. Route 89 North to Route 464 North (Browning)
4. Route 464 North to Route 89 South 7 miles to St. Mary

Why would I send you on a route that makes one double back to get to St Mary? Route 89 North of Browning is small, up down and around. Route 464 is fairly flat and normal width. This is the way I always go to St. Mary.
