Blue Ridge Parkway, NC -Biker Friendly

Hello..

We are looking to "do" the BRP in August on our bikes... We are tentatively looking for campgrounds near and/or around Maggie Valley/Asheville, NC area... We are not apposed to looking elsewhere.. but that would be the "general" area we are looking for...

We are looking for a "biker" friendly campground... and probably something that would be more adult oriented.. Also.. if possible.. if you know of a campground that offers cabin rentals.. that would be great..

Thanks in advance

We've stayed at Stone Bridge in Maggie Valley a few times. They are biker friendly and they do have rental cabins. A few years ago they underwent ownership changes and the place was poorly managed/maintained. They have since been sold again , but I don't know if they've turned the place around. The RV Park has paved interior roads, accommodates big rigs, has a pool and small rec hall. Sites on the creek are nice, some of the interior sites have weird utility setups arraigned so that your door faves the neighbors door, giving you a shared "patio" .
If you do go there, be sure to stop at Snappy's Restaurant. Great food and huge portions.

Recommend you start on the east end and do the entire length. You will start on Skyline Drive which becomes the Blue Ridge. There is a Good Sam on the Drive that has a motorcycle section.

East end of the Blue Ridge parkway: Willville. Ask Will about local rides. He will point you to some great riding. We liked going to Burkes Garden. There is a route to get there and back that will have you seeing your tail light on some corners.

Center of the parkway: Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground. Near Maggie Valley. Check out Wheels Through Time motorcycle museum. All the motorcycles in the museum run and if you are fortunate Dale or his son may be there and start some up.

West End: Iron Horse Motorcycle Campground. Wonderful campground. Close to Cherhola Parkway and Tail of the Dragon.

The last time we were there the only access to the Dragon was at Deals Gap. A landslide had closed the other end. That was years ago and the road should be repaired.

There was also a landslide on the Parkway near Asheville but I imagine that will have been repaired as well.

While there another good ride is from Cherokee up to Gatlinburg. If you have interest you will be near Pigeon Forge and Dollywood.

Oh yeah, if you get as far as Iron Horse you have to experience the "Tail of the Dragon". www.tailofthedragon.com

Great drive and beautiful mountains. Please put a muffler on your bike if you don't have one. The hills and curves are fun but sound of straight pipes deafening.

Thanks.
