Bonneville Salt Flat Speed Week 2011

We are in Logan, Utah headed to Bonneville and would like any info on what to do, where to camp and how to go about seeing the speed trials.
And any other tips.

(timing trials start tomorrow Aug 9)
Thanks,
CCC

Not a ton to do in Wendover. I believe they let you stay out on the flats overnight, but it is hot, no hookups, and no shade. There is 1 or 2 RV parks in town. If i remember right, there is one behind the Rainbow Casino. The Peppermill casino has a concert hall, and always have a band, or comic or the like performing there. If you have ATV's there is Knolls 40 miles before Wendover, and then there is the Pilot Range, just north of wendover to fourwheel in. If you have scuba gear, Blue lake is south of Wendover, and is a warm, clear place that you can scuba at. Other than the casinos, that about sums it up!

Been awhile since I was there but do recall a KOA and the museum where the training for the atom bomb drop was conducted in 1945 is an interesting history lesson.

If you aren't there yet, with an RV you can stay at "the bend." You won't miss all the RV's already there -- just get off heading to the salt, and where the road "bends" you'll see people parked off the road in the flats (this is not a salt area).

As others have said you can't overnight on the salt. I've seen big coaches out on the flats during the days -- just stay on the main paths and you'll be fine. if you get off the "beaten paths" you might stumble into a wet area (although if you don't stop I bet you'd be able to drive through it... it's soft but not like quicksand).

However, if you have any kind of towed vehicle, that's what I'd recommend. They will power wash your car to get the salt off it at the end of the day (it builds up like snow). The race activities are broadcast on an AM frequency so you can keep track of what's going on.

Obviously, bring lots of sunscreen since there no shade AND the sun bounces off the white surface of the flats quite well.

Personally I wouldn't bother with Wendover other than the museum if it is open.

Steve

Bonneville SW begins Sat AUg 13-Fri Aug 19, 2011. As mentioned,no overnite camping on the salt(BLM Rule). Bend in the Road dry camping is available, Garbage dumpsters and porta potties are provided sparingly.
Warning, fireworks, mini bikes,go karts, partyers, most of the nite.
AT sunrise, the access road to the salt is constant traffic to be let onto the salt. You gotta do Bville at least once.

1610AM will have race results beginning about 8am each day. Drivers mtg at Sat. Start line around 9AM go here for more info, and don't forgert sunblock. Food & drinks avail. on the salt provided by Enola Gay Cafe crew

BIG THANKS TO ALL,

We arrived in Wendover today. What a place casinos and salt---that is it.

Of all things we are in the RV park at the NUGGET Casino full hookups----talk about being a big weenie, we plead guilty.

Drove to the salt and found just as described lots of rv's already in the "bend". Personally I would like to be over there but this minimizes damage!!!!!

Here it is $35per day or $200 per week but not a lot of spaces.
Parking at the flats appears to be real easy, just pull over and park, bingo.
As early as it is I can tell this is going to be a blast not just on the track, saw a guy in a teepee, another really heavy guy in a Teardrop, and every type of tent weird homemade truck campers, you get the picture.

Glad you made it to the salt! Seeing you're at the Nugget(formerly the stateline)go upstairs to see the Bonneville room, and all the nostalgic photos.
BTW, get ready for the very large Annual RatRod,impromptu Car SHow held ALL over the Nugget starts Fri nite. I stayed there last SW, Had to park across street each nite at the Montego Bay Casino. You'll love the Motorized margarita mixers in the pARKING lot. Better Casino security than yrs. past. They try to keep things rather calm.

You gotta eat at The salt flats cafe at the truck stop before "The Bend in the Road". Marcello & Family are the best. Plus see the wall covered salt flat race pics! Warning, the place will be packed early morning & evening. Try lunchtime.
Have fun, and Help "save the salt" and pleez donate. See gate guard LInda at Lands End,where you pay for entry.

We're looking at going to Speed week in 2012 (August). Unfortunately, the KOA appears to be already full(!) and the Nugget casino RV park mentioned above is not open. Looks like the nearest place for hookups that has openings is a (sparse) RV park at Angel Lake RV Park in Wells, UT (60 miles away).

We've considered just try camping (free) at "the bend" that is adjacent to where you can get out on the salt. The catch? We won't be pulling a toad and it looks like a 5 mile walk. Not a biggie for me, but two kids in tow and the dear wife who would swelter in the heat (up to 100+) for the walk. Sure would be cool if they ran a shuttle from Wendover to the salt and back! Can't take a rental car out on the salt ($600 fine) Suggestions?

Wanderoso,
Yes it is a 5 mile walk from the camping area to the time trials area and yes you COULD walk but then what? The sun and the salt is HOT, you will need your vehicle for the shade. NO place for kids without shade, you did not mention the ages of the kids, but I would not take any less than full teenager, PERIOD.
This is a time trial and not a race, big difference. Much down time. The cars are spread over MILES of salt. Note also more than one track.

I strongly suggest the foregoing, strongly. Transportation is a necessity. The camping at the bend looks like fun with plenty of company, tho we stayed at the casino CG in town. Even with just THE WIFE and I!!

Thanks for the details about how spread out things likely will be. So did you end up driving a toad (car) onto the salt? (Kids are 10 and 12). I see photos of RVs on the salt, but have some second thoughts about doing that. Bikes might be an option.

Like ccc mentioned, taking younger kids to the salt w/o sun protection would be pretty hard. You wouldn't have trouble hitchin' a free short ride to the pits or start line, from the thousands at "The Bend".
I'm not condoning taking a "rental" onto the salt, but it happens all the time. You gotta place plastic garbage bags on the floor, and CLEAN the fenderwells ,undercarriage, real good. There is a gentlemen with a huge water tank, and power washer that does cars, race trailers, tow vehicles each nite as they leave the salt from prolly 4P-6P, for approx $10,depending on size.
You also see Many class C Cruise America's on the salt along the "spectator row"where race vehicles fill up with event gas, then head for their respective start lines.
2012 Speedweek is Sat Aug 11-Fri Aug 17. Inspections begin Thurs & Fri,free admittance for soectators on those days.
AS time draws near go to : Landracing.com - Home (click on bonneville)it's the premiere land speed site, where many racers & old salts give freely of their vast yrs. of exp.
Many folks ask for first time help & ideas. Also watch for unexpected hotel room cancellations at Wendover hotels and casinos, (both states). There is a KOA in Salt Lake, but that's 2 hrs East. Called V.I P. KOA. on North Temple. ABout 5 mons off I80.

Hope this helps. Depending on your childrens ages, they will never forget the sights & sounds of Bonneville. Warning: Speed costs money. How fast do they want to go? LOL

Good tips. I'm thinking that someone could make great $$ with a shuttle service on the salt! Our kids are pretty hearty, which is good. Made a drive from Anaheim / Disney to Portland, OR in one long day trip and they handled it in stride. I guess the question is, would you drive your RV on the salt? Maybe it's like asking if one will take a newer 4x4 that spends its life off road into the brush.

We parked the
TT at the casino in town, but there were several HUNDRED RV of all types on the salt at the bend. I see no problem with that. We drove our truck a Ford 250 4 door all over the salt.
The sun is HOT and is no place for children as young as yours with no shade. Park at the bend with your rv and leave the kids in it and you go to the time trials. Hey , that is a personal opinion! What I would do in the circumstances.
You must be fully dressed with large hat, long sleeve shirt and long pants.
The heat is coming from the sun and the salt.
