Can't speak to where to camp or boondock as I am new, but I did a road trip from Pahrump to pick up my brother (in a pickup) in Flagstaff about 8 years ago.

We both needed some windshield time and we went to see 5 acres that I bought online years ago SW of Alamosa, CO. Pagosa Springs was the coolest place on earth and I wish we would have stopped to buy elk steaks between there and Del Norte.

I do recommend seeing that area.

Scotty, Thanks for the tip! I will add that to the list of stops it looks amazing! Very similar to Dead Horse Poin SP near Moab. We will be heading that direction and through Monument Valley on our way to Zion NP From Mesa Verde.
Goulding's is a very nice place to stay. It is also very busy park with a lot of turnover every day. Someone posted about Goosenecks after we returned home and I was kicking myself. If you are not faint of heart, the Moki Dugway is only a few miles past the entrance to Goosenecks. Toads only!! It is a real eye opener.

Valley of the Gods is litterally across the road from Goosenecks, but we didn't make it there either.

Moki Dugway (UT Hwy 261)
