VT came up in the MD thread so I started a new one. We have stayed at a couple of places near Burlington. The Shelburne Camping Area has mixed reviews, we spent 3 nights on Memorial Day weekend in '09 and had no problems. Very close to the Shelburne Museum a must see in the area.

Another place west of Burlington in South Hero is Apple Island Resort. This is a better bet especially if with kids. We spent 5 nights in late August '09 and 4 of that was at Passport America rates.

We were headed to the Thousand Islands area of NY. An incredible area and very reasonable priced for being in NY. But that area calls for its own thread. It is well up there on our must return to list. We ended up spending 9 nights at the Birch Haven CG. If I-81 is how you get north, then the 1,000 Islands area is a must to consider.

Happy travels,

I'll throw my 2 cents in here....

~ About an hour south of Burlington we have stayed a number of times at Lake Dunmore Kampersville It can get crowded on the weekend and noisy, but if you stay away from the pool area they have some nice large sites. There are always things going on: 3 pools, bingo just about every night, Dances, Shuffleboard, Horseshoes, swimming beach...Bring your kayak or canoe to paddle around the lake. The lake might be 1/2 mile wide by about a mile or two long. Here are a few pix's

~ About 30 minutes east of
Burlington on the way to Stowe there is a low key campground called Gold Brook Campground. Good location, the best grassy sites anywhere. It was mowed like a golf course. At the fire pit the grass was so nice I just laid down on it to watch the fire. Clean pool, clean showerhouse but dated. Gold Brook pixs

We're booking out Labor day weekend now and looking at the same area. Another member here has stayed at North Shore campground right on the lake just north of Burlington itself. We looked into it and it seems pretty nice so I think I may head there. It's worth a look.

As a former Vermonter and frequent visitor, I would second the Apple Island suggestion. The others, not so much. There is a campground, owned by the City of Burlington, called North Beach Campground. It is right on the lake, but it is a part of a larger park that provides beach access for residents.

We have been to the Shelburne Campground years back when we tent camped. I remember it being cold !

We have stayed and would recommend staying at the North Beach Campground that is owned by the Burlington Department of Parks and Recreation.

RV Park Review here.

With the access of the bicycle / walking trail that is along Lake Champlain right from the campground makes it convenient to get some exercise, bicycle or walk the dogs.

Want something to eat? Try one of the many eateries like the Penny Cluse Cafe.

Interested in a Brewery tour? Try a visit at Magic Hat Brewing Company

Plenty to do in the northern Vermont area for a long weekend or even a week.
