We usually take the Rt 81 path, but last January there was 6-8 inches of snow predicted for that side of the mountains and rain expected on the Eastern side. We made the decision to go from Hyannis on Cape Cod (where we get off the car ferry) straight down 95 to Cherry Hill Park between Baltimore and DC. We got off the ferry at 8:45 and hit Cherry Hill Park at 4:30 without having had a single encounter with traffic. The storm hit just after I plugged us in and walked the dogs and rained all night.

Now the question for next year... were we just lucky or should we try it again? I'm leaning towards just lucky.

BTW, coming from the Cape, we take 195->95->Tappan Zee->to Rt 78 across to I-81.

Anybody have any thoughts to help me decide?

You can avoid 495 altogether. Just tell your GPS to avoid the highway between Dahlgren VA and Cherry Hill. I live in So MD and have gone there without getting on 495. If you have to go on 495 make it as short a trip as possible.
