I'm plannig a trip from California to Massachusetts this summer. It looks like a straight shoot into Illinois, but how do you avoid the toll roads from (Joliet) Illinois to (Middleboro) Massachusetts. Or is it easier and faster going on the toll roads? If, so what is it going to cost use the toll roads

Hi, You could take Route 30 east to I 75 in Ohio, take I 75 north, to I 76 east, to I 80 east, across PA. These are free and more scenic then the Turnpike system. I 80 traverses PA then check your maps from there. "RED Line " roads are more fun to travel and the ones I have listed are wide and easy to follow...The route listed is part interstate and not taking you to far out of your way. GRV

Regarding the above post!!! Take U.S. 30 to I71, North to I76.

The post is accurate, just an error between I75 and I71.

U.S. 30 in Indiana and Ohio is the best secret in the midwest.

Iceit...if you take I-80 east, just pick up 81 north to Scranton and that will take you to I-84 east thru NY state and into Connecticut. I don't know where Middleboro is in Mass. but a good road atlas should be able to get you there with a minimum of toll roads. Good luck.

Go to the Good Sam website (some other mapping software offer this too) and use their trip routing link. Select the option "avoid tolls".
The toll fees on the Indiana I80/I90 toll road have risen considerably since Mitch Daniels sold the rights to that foreign company; they may be found on the official Indiana website.
US 30 through W. Indiana and nearby Chicago is heavily congested, with mostly stop N go traffic. You might consider I70 until you get East of Indiana.

I80 East to I65 and South to 30. If there is heavy traffic, take I80 to Indiana 49 which is the first exit on the Indiana Toll Road. U.S. 30 is about 8 mile South. You have minimal toll.

Another option is to take U.S. 24 East, 224 East, U.S.30 in Van Wert, Ohio. There is a lot of nice rural roads on this route. Not much traffic, but it may not be the most direct route for you.

I would recommend I80, I65 South to U.S. 30.

Drive this route about once a month.
