Calico Ghost town

Has anyone visited the Calico Ghost town near Barstow California? Is it worth going, it looks like there is a KOA close by?

I stayed at the KOA a couple of years ago and it wasn't any more dirty or noisy than other park near an interstate. The Calico RV park may be quieter but all dirt and very crowded on the weekends. The "ghost town" is a little interesting but on the poor side. I had driven by it for 35 years until I finally stopped. Lots of off-roading in the area which is the major draw.

I've stopped at the Calico Ghost Town on two different trips, one in 2014 and the other in 2017.

Not a real ghost town, but a tourist trap, although an interesting one. A bit of history as you wander through the buildings. If you have been to the Goldfield Ghost Town in Apache Junction, it is similar.

As to the campground, $43.00 for a full hookup site, kinda beat, and you need to go into the first building in the ghost town (about 3/4 of a mile away) to pay. I did get a good chicken fried steak dinner at the restaurant...

Calico Ghost Town has it's own campground. Do make reservations if you go. The Ghost town itself is just okay and very touristy. If you don't camp there, there is an entrance fee; if you stay at their campground, entrance is free. We spent about a week and had a great time exploring the area. Also if you have off road vehicles, you can access a trail out of the cg.

I have a Jeep and was wondering if there was enough in the area to explore for the week. The weekends look like they are booked solid, so will go during the week.

We’ve stayed in the the Ghost Town Campground for the last few Halloweens. They put on a great show and it a great time for the kids. As far as the campground goes, it is mostly dirt and some spots have hook ups and some don’t. You can off road out of the campground if you stay in the front part. I don’t believe the back allows or access unless you’re in a street legal vehicle. It’s way better then the KOA.

have stayed at the KOA several times - last trip our friends stayed at the ghost town and we liked the koa better - guess we're in the minority. the koa's lower rates compensate for the "free" ghost town entry included in their camping fees. lots of jeep trails in the area.

I don't see any mention of the size of the sites, can I fit a 40ft motorhome in any of the full hook up sites?

Kirby gives two thumbs up for Calico Ghost Mine Campground. He liked going in to the caves on his nightly walk. Click image for larger version

Last time we were there, we found plenty of off-site camping area (BLM land?).

The Ghost Town is contrived, and is a commercial venture. A lot of people seem to expect a true, arrested-decay, ghost town, not an entertainment park. I think it is great fun! Kids think it is amazing, and probably a lot more educational than adults would realize.
