No problems going 101 to 580. Done it several times in our 40' coach with a towed. Depending on what time of day it is, traffic may be more of an issue. No tolls. You're going the free direction over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. I'm assuming you're heading South? GPS (My RM and Garmin) will try to get you to take 205 East to 5 South. Stay on right 580 after you drop off the Altamont Grade. This is the most direct route to I-5 South.
Safe travels.

Pretty good road. Pay close attention to the road signs as you head down through the Oakland area.

When we go from/to Oregon to S.F. Ca.....we go via 101 and Hi 37. See if this works for you. Keeps you out of Oakland/East Bay which is difficult... to a nightmare, depending on time... and day.

Take 101 to 37 east at Novato. Avoid the San Fran/Oakland mess.

My route is similar to the previous one, but at Petaluma I take Hwy 116 to Lakeview Hwy to Hwy 37. Then I-80 to I-780 to I-680 to I-580 to I-5.

We just did that exact route last week. The road is good and was easy driving. Hwy 37 is really nice through the wetlands of the N. Bay. Plus, this route gets out of the Oakland mess that we really wanted to miss on a holiday weekend.
