Campground from a childhood memory

Hello gang, I'm wondering if the wise sages in the site can help me out. I recall going camping with my grandparents when I was a young lad. Two of the many campgrounds we visited that have stood out in my mind all these years. One was in Michigan. As I recall it, it was along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and heavily wooded. I also recall there were very high banks that separated the park from the beach area and lake. I strongly believe it was a State park but can't be sure. I remember body surfing there after a storm, the waves were HUGE!
The other park I'd like to relocate but have even less of a memory of was either in Michigan or perhaps Indiana. It may have been a KOA back then, 40 yrs, This one I'm fairly certain was a private park. The only thing I have to be able to identify the park was that it had a ghost town in it, a real ghost town not recreated one.
Not much to go on I know, but you never know till you ask.
Thanks,
Stewart

The first campground sounds like Michigan's Warren Dunes State Park Warren Dunes State Park Detail It has been 30 years since we've been there, but remember it was spectacular with high sand dunes.

We enjoyed your current neck of the woods a few years ago!

Thank you very much! Looked at the site, that could be it. That one is definitely on my list.

Nice challenge. Thought I'd see what Google could do.

Here's some ghost town info that may get you closer to the second CG memory. It seems they are talking more about steel/mining industry related ghost towns. Try these links and see if some of the towns mentioned conjure up memories.

Michigan - Quite a few ghost towns
Ghost Towns of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan from the copper mining of the 1800s

Ghost Towns of Michigan

Fayette General Store - has a ghost town at the town campground

Indiana - Not much about ghost towns
Ghost Town Trail - Indiana County Parks

Ottffss, thanks for that. I'll give them a look. This is the greatest site.

Ottffss, I checked out the links, sadly it's been so long since I was there I wouldn't know it if I fell into it, so the pictures didn't illuminate anything for me. Great reading though.
Thanks again.

maybe Orchard Beach State Park - c.g. is high on a bluff, many stairs down to the water.

I think I remember the name of the other campground, the one with what I thought was a ghost town in it, Fort Apache. I think that's it. I'm thinking it would have been in Michighan, Indiana or therabouts.
Ring any bells for anyone?
