We are going to Charleston S.C. over Thanksgiving and need advice on the best campgrounds to stay at. If any of them have a shuttle to the city it would be helpful.

We really enjoyed James Island Park. I think it's a county park but a great location... one of the best dog parks you'll find anywhere.... nice bike and walking paths.

Thanks for the info we were leaning to James park but have never stayed in a county park before. Do they allow campfires?

Yes they do. They are by far the best park in the area.

Charleston is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the War Between the States. You should be there at a good time to experience some of the festivities. If you're a Civil War buff, this is a good site.

We always stay at Oak Plantation when in Charleston. There is plenty of room there and it is usually quiet. We rode through James Island County Park on 2 occasions and it just seems too crowded for our style. It is also a big day use park. Having said that though, many people do like it, its just not for us.

Oak Plantation is a nice campground. When we made reservations there about four years ago, they would not accept RVs over a certain age without inspecting them. Just be sure you don't exceed the speed limit or you will get a chewing out.

You will also have the added pleasure of enjoying the Holiday Festival of Lights at the James Island County Park. The Holiday Festival of Lights draws many visitors to the park during the holiday season.

I have lived in Charleston all my life. I would recommend James Island County Park.

James Island is nice and if you have children and are into hiking, biking and activities it is probably the place to stay. We, however, much prefer Oak Plantation. Quieter, less traffic, and just basically a more adult environment.

James Island
If the Christmas lights are on while you are there it is a must see
only problem would be traffic if it is light season
