We have stayed at the Petaluma KOA 4 times in the last 18 months. It is a very nice KOA but a bit pricey if you are using it just as a place to "park" your RV. Not much in the way of activities on site.

We have never stayed at Novato so can't give you an honest opinion about it.

They are probably equal distance to the Napa Valley wineries, Petaluma closer to the Sonoma Valley wineries.

Check out Casini Family Campground @ http://www.casiniranch.com/ for another option. A further drive to the wineries but about 1/2 price of KOA. It is 5 minutes to the Sonoma Coast. It is unpaved if that is a problem.

We used to live in Novato and the park is close to Hwy 101 and I would think, quite noisy. It is well cared for, so it may suit your needs.

Petaluma KOA is located away from Hwy 101 and would certainly be a quiet park by comparison.

How close do you want to be to the Napa Wine Country? There is RVing available at the Napa Fairgrounds (in the city of Napa). Napa Valley Expo rates $25-30. 20/30 amp service. (707) 253-4900.

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park in at the north end of the Napa Valley. Very nice state park, but you need to know that Calif. State Parks usually have no electricity or water at the sites. Rates $15-25. (800) 942-4575.

At the south end of the Napa Valley, in Vallejo is the Tradewinds RV Park. It is located within 1 block of I-80 and I suspect it would be noisy. However, Vallejo is at the south end of Hwy 29 which is the main road through the Napa Valley, and this park may be closer than Novato or Petaluma. Tradewinds is a Good Sam park, $30, (707) 643-4000.

Enjoy your trip to California.

We stayed at Casini Family Campground July 4th and the only problem we found is that the area is extremely dry and although they came around with a water truck every few hours, the dust from vehicles driving around was a real issue. To attempt to mitigate this they are very strict with the 5 MPH speed limit. We have heard from friends that at other times of the year this is a great place.

Sorry its taken me awhile to respond, but thanks for the info on both places.I've heard that petaluma koa has some low trees in some areas.Quiet would be nice though, yet tradewinds is located closer, less driving time up to the vineyards,restaurants,etc..To bad the wineries don't have hook-ups for rv's! Decisions, decisions, Cheers, BB

The Fairgrounds in Napa have a newly upgraded RV Park. Very Nice. Long concrete pads with full hookups, clean restrooms, and laundry facilities. Great home base when traveling around the area. The folks were very friendly and accommodating. Though the new RV park area has only very young fruit trees planted, the rest of the grounds have lots of trees and very park like. Nice place to take a stroll. Would definately stay with them again.

I agree that the Napa Expo is good. Try to avoid the Novato RV park if possible. Just a large, noisy, tight, parking lot.......RV Park Reviews is a good place to get an idea about RV parks and campgrounds. Usually pretty accurate.

On our 2002 trip we stayed at the Petaluma KOA and thought highly of it. Sites were large and even had a Peacock walking trough our site.
