Campground thoughts around Mt. Rushmore

Wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions on a campground to spend 5-7 days while visiting the Mt. Rushmore area. I'll be in a 30' travel trailer with 1 slide plus the queen bed slides out the back making the unit 35' long when out.

Thanks,

Patsy

Last time we were there, we stayed in the Rapid City KOA. As a matter of fact, I've got reservations there again this July. It's pricey in a typical KOA fashion, but it's nice.

I've also stayed at the Lazy J, but wouldn't recommend that one to anybody. They stack you like cordwood.

Check out Rapid City (South Dakota ) - Campground Reviews - RV Park Reviews Lots of places to choose from.

We like the Mt Rushmore KOA which is between Mt Rushmore and Hill City. We've stayed there a couple times and have had good experiences. It's a good location to the Black Hills attractions.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Custer State Park was my original plan -- no availability at this late date via their online reservations. Hart Ranch appears to be a membership campground which isn't an option for me. Used the RV Park Reviews to get the scoop on campgrounds in the area. Beaver Lake's rates are $38 for E/W and I assume there is a sewer dump on grounds free to guests as they leave (it's $41 with sewer at site).

Looked at the KOAs in the area and we prefer something that isn't full of attractions to pull in families. NOTHING AGAINST family camping -- we just prefer being around retired people as ourselves.

Anyone heard of Heartland RV Park in Hermosa, SD?

Patsy

Look up a place called Nemo. I didn't camp there but I checked it out when I went to Sturgis. It was a beautiful little campground.

We stayed at Broken Arrow CG located south of Custer back in the summer of 2009. At that time it was a Passport and very reasonable. It was also very nice and quiet with spacious pull throughs.

When are you planning on being there? We'll be there at the end of August.

Custer State Park is a beautiful park to day trip to, but it takes a long time to get in and out of a the campgrounds as the access roads are limited.

We always stay at the Rafter J Bar. I think you'll find it perfectly central to everything you'll want to do and see in the area.

We made reservations at Heartland for 7 days and they gave us the Passport America rate for the whole stay (saved $140). Gonna be there the end of June.
