Hey Everybody, Wife and I and kids were thinking of going to Mt. Rushmore this summer and I was wondering about campgrounds. I will be pulling my 26' fiver in case that makes a differance in sites. I hopr to be going somewhere around the middle of June, but that remains to be seen. Oh, I almost forgot, We will also have our dog with us too. We took a vacation to Niagra Falls, Ont. a couple years ago and the dog traveled better that the kids!!

Check out Flintstones, www.flintstonesbedrockcity.com in Custer, SD. It is 35 miles from Mt. Rushmore, 45 miles from Rapid City, 6 miles from Crazy Horse monument and 6 miles from Custer State Park where all the critters are. Also, many caves in the area. We will be workamping there in the RV registration.
Also full hookups, 35/50 amps. Bring your satellite dish. TV is kinda sparce.

A few years ago we stayed at the KAO just outside (west) of the town of Custer. It was a good base for touring all the tourist sites.
Our stay was in a tent trailer in early October, just before the buffalo round up.

We went to Rushmore last summer. We base camped in Custer State Park for several days. Beautiful campgrounds and scenery. No hookups, but we didn't need them and we prefer the cheaper rates anyway. We also stayed a couple of days at Big Pine Campground inside Custer, SD. Nice park without the high cost of several others around it. If you don't mind camping without hookups (showers and water nearby) the campgrounds inside Custer State Park are beautiful.

Can't remember where we stayed, but it was a Good Sam Park and fine. But allow yourself plenty of time in area. We didn't. Lots to see. Custer State Park takes a while to see. And many other landmarks that we couldn't take in with 4 days there. And go to rushmore for their night program.

Since you're going that way, allow one day to see the badlands if you've never seen them. We stayed in a campground at the eastern entrance at exit 131. Nothing fancy but we only stayed one night. If you drive through the badlands try to do it at first light or start about 1 1/2 hours before sunset. The angle of the sun really brings out the colors then. Have a great trip.

Tom,
We visited this spot two years ago and did ALOT of research before we booked.
Its the Rafter J campground ( http://www.rafterj.com/).
In one sentence by far the best campground we have stayed at in 5 years.
Very Clean Very pleasant staff and close to everything.
Don't go anywhere else but the Rafter J.
The spots are huge and the kids have a blast.
Make sure you take the horse back riding through custer park.
any question drop me a line,
Joel
