We're traveling to the UP this June. Have been reading about the state parks in the area. Any recommendations? Any "Must see"?
Thanks in advance,
Keith

First visit here http://www.uppermichiganwaterfalls.com/home.html
Check out Lower Tahquamenon River Falls and Tahquamenon River, four miles from Upper Tahquamenon Falls. These are both state parks, campign at the lower falls
I'd include these on the "MUST SEE LIST
There is a municipal park in Grand Marais you might wish to check out too. Righ on the shores of the big lake
Beyond that I can not help much The municipal park is small but well layed out as I recall (have not been there in over 20 years though) You may have rig-size limits at Michigan State Parks (Like I said have not been there in 20 years)
That is God's Country, no question about it.
If you are passing through LOWER Michigan.. Just ask

Please excuse the hijack. We're looking to do 10-12 days in lower MI (bottom half of the mitten) starting the 2nd week in Oct. I've tentatively got Lakeport SP & Sunny Brook on the list & may, possibly want to head all the way over to the west side to Traverse Bay. So I'll take you up on your offer for CG suggestions in lower MI. Wanting to stay about 3 nights at each CG before moving on.
Thanks, in advance, for any help.

There is a great national park near Traverse City called Sleeping Bear Dunes. We were there early last spring and really enjoyed it. Close to a number of other must see things as well as very quaint.

Also there is a State Park under the Mac bridge that affords great views and nicely set up. It is not great for extra large units however. Along Hwy 2 west of St. Ignace there are a few cgs with lake views that we have stayed at over the years...Don't miss a fresh hot pastie for lunch or dinner in the UP as well.
There used to be a great cg on Little Bay de Noc that is great for fishing...haven't been there for 10 yrs or so but it was on the east shore. I think you'll love the U.P., Lower Mi is great too. We live directly across the lake from Lakeport SP and take trips there frequently when fuel prices preclude our favourite area which is the Thumb of Michigan. Lots of private parks and 2 very nice State Parks as well.
BTW Michigan needs all the tourist traffic it can get! Times are really tough over there for the average family.

We camped at two casino campgrounds in the UP when we were in Michigan in Oct. 2007. One is near Marquette, which is a beautiful area, and is the Ojibwa Casino. It is free and offers a very few electric only sites. The other is close to Sault Ste Marie. It is Bay Mills Casino (full hookups). From Bay Mills we saw Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point and the locks at Sault Ste Marie. I would consider all of those "must sees". From Bay Mills we went to Traverse City and stayed at Timber Ridge CG (full hookups). From there we visited wineries, Sleeping Bear Dunes and other beautiful areas. If I remember correctly, some of the state parks close by were more expensive (esp. for out of staters), in comparison to the ones where we stayed. I do not recommend Fisherman's Landing & Campground in Muskegon, farther South on the Lake Michigan shore. Got stuck in a site and had to be towed out -- unpleasant view -- unpleasant smell -- not a good experience. Also, groceries very expensive in Muskegon. Even lower in Michigan we stayed several days at Tri-Ponds Family Camp Resort, Allegan, MI. This was a very nice campground. We saw the Holland, MI, area from there. All in all, we loved our trip through Michigan! Look forward to going back some day. Have a good time!

Groveite that would be 'Straights State Park' if I'm not mistaken.. One word of caution there, Again I've not been there in 20 years but from time to time I mention a park where I watched the water pressure spike at like 120 PSI.. That's it. Regulator recommended. Otherwise a nice park
In the lower Penna I liked Big Lake State Park.. it's basically on US-27 in Indian River about 30 miles south of the Big Bridge.
There is Hartwick Pines near Graling (Crawford County)
How about some more links for you to try :
http://www.michigan.org/Places-to-St....aspx?city=G42
http://www.michigan.org/Places-to-Go...e/Default.aspx
Michigan DNR (STATE PARKS) link
There is a lovely state park on the shores of Lake Michigan, and another (Algonac) on the east coast
Silver Lake State park features Sand Dunes. (In the lower penna, there is a Dunes state park too)
All in all.. You can spend a lot of time in Michigan State Parks.
REservations are suggested

We put Lower Tahquamenon River Falls and Tahquamenon River on the must see list. Found the "hijack" informative as well since we will be traveling thought the lower part of Michigan to/from the UP. Thanks so much for sharing your information!

If you're going REALLY UP - like to the Keweenaw - I highly recommend Houghton's City Park. Gorgeous tiered sites - each with its own private covered table, and every one with a view of the canal. Make reservations early - they stay packed!!

There's also a very nice, and inexpensive city-owned park in Lake Linden. Great scenery and good sites. Only downside is no sewer hookup, but there's a dump station just outside the entrance.

The casino near Brimley has an up-to-date RV Park and golf.

The County Park just north of Munising in the UP. is very nice. Very large sites, 50amp. service and right on Lake Superior. Very close to Pictured Rocks (awesome) and only a few miles from a casino.
