Campgrounds near Great Smokey Mountains from the South Side

I am going to the GSM Wednesday and am looking to travel US 441 through Georgia into N.C. and stay in or near Cherokee, N.C. Looking for a campground for 27' Travel Trailer with full hookup. Do not want expensive resort, but nice campground, inexpensive but not trashy. Any to avoid? Looking at Cherokee Campground and Great Smokey Mountain RV but not much info on them on internet. Any recommendations?

How are the roads around the area after this Hurricane that went by and flooded S.C.? Any flooding in N.C.? Is 441 good to pull a 27' Toy hauler bumper pull? Advice from anyone in or knowing the area please. Thanks in advance for answers to any of these questions and any advice from those in the know.

Bob,

Can't help a lot, but have taken that route to and from our area a few times without incident. Other then the typical small town traffic your going to hit, its a nice ride. You should not have any issues.

Have not stayed at either of those CG's. However I can recommend one just a little east of there. It's called Cascade Lake and it's just outside of Brevard. Really nice CG's on the lake. Might be a little to fair east for your track, but closest I have stayed near Cherokee.

Safe travels..

We stayed at the Cherokee KOA this spring and loved it. Also, liked the look of River Valley campground nearby. Both of these sit right on the river and are near the falls. Not sure if the recent weather affected these two campgrounds.

441 in GA up to Cherokee is almost all 4 lane, and a very easy drive for any RV (we are newbie's with our MH, and have driven this 3 times already). One 8% grade just north of Franklin NC and another one in Sylva, but no big deal.

We stayed at Happy Holiday just east of downtown Cherokee which is a nice campground, not fancy, but we enjoyed our stay. We were on the right side, 2nd row which was ok, but I would suggest a site on the side by the lake, and back from the river which also is right along hwy 19 (really not too loud in the evening......)

The KOA and Yogi on the north side of town are more "in the woods" and appeared to be very family / kid oriented, but at this time of the year probably not relevant. Again, the river sites are also right along the main road, but i would assume not much traffic back there. There was another campground near KOA & Yogi that we caught a glimpse of that looked like it could have been very nice (maybe River Valley noted above), but we did not take the time to get a closer look.

We like Happy Holiday. Beware of the ducks and geese around the lake. They will bring messy presents delivered to you at your camp site for no additional charge. All along the creek is good.

We drove 441 this summer and enjoyed the route. We really liked the KOAs in Cherokee and Pigeon Forge. However the road in / directions to KOA Cherokee were both difficult.

Cherokee RV was a nice quiet park on the river tucked in a little valley behind the Wendy's. I will go again, but they close for the winter soon.
