Camping in the Everglades in April
My wife and I are looking for campgrounds in the Everglades for the second week in April on our way down to the Keys. We have never been to the area and are looking for one or two campgrounds to serve as a base. We will be bringing our kayaks, so looking for places to paddle as well. We will need at least electric hookups. We want to get a good overview of the area, maybe a airboat trip, etc. Thank you in advance for your suggestions. I'm sort of intrigued by Flamingo campground; what can I expect there in April; reservations necessary?

We found Flamingo campground in the Everglades to be great! Great birdwatching, inexpensive and lots of places to kayak.

There are two campgrounds in the Everglades - Flamingo and Long Pine Key. I have stayed at both, and they each have theit pluses and minuses.
Some of the sites at Flamingo have electric hookups. Long Pine has no hookups. We have never been bothered by mosquitoes at Long Pine, but one January at Flamingo, we had a week with no mosquitoes, and then one day they arrived in such numbers, that we moved to Long Pine.
Flamingo involves an extra 70 miles of driving every time you need to ge for groceries.
When we go, we take along our 18' kevlar canoe. Flamingo is closer to the numerous paddling trails in the southern part of the park. There is also some good paddling around the Everglades City entrance to the park. There are marked trails with platforms and shelters for camping, that make it possible to paddle from the Everglades City area to Flamingo.

Look into Collier-Seminole State Park. Good paddling right in the park, Corrie Billy, a native Seminole has an airboat place adjacent to the park. Not too far away is Loop Road for a very interesting drive... there is a sign that says local traffic only, just go by it. . Also nearby is the Turner River Canoe launch and another good drive on Jane's Scenic Drive is close to the park. Shark Valley is worth a stop for several hours. It is a bit of a drive from the park. Also nearby the park is Goodland, with Stan's Famous Bar.

How is Collier-Seminole for a 30' travel trailer? I've heard the sites are sort of tight. I've also heard the sites can be muddy.
Are the bugs bad in early April at Collier-Seminole, Midway, and Flamingo. I'm thinking I may spend a few days at each. Do you think reservations are advisable?

I've been in Collier-Seminole with our 37' coach with no issues. However, Collier-Seminole is undergoing renovations .... from the site:

We've been there with our 37'MH and toad with no issues. The sites are not the roomiest, but certainly doable. Bugs in April are questionable... depends on how the winter goes and what the temps and rain is in April.

I don't know about the bugs at Collier-Seminole. I have camped at Midway as late as March, and had no trouble with bugs.
Flamingo is unpredictable There, they get salt marsh mosquitoes that seem to come an go in waves. Even in the winter, you can have none one day, and hordes of them the next. I have never been there as late as April, but I would expect them to be quite nasty
