Camping near Chicago

The DW and I will be caravanning with another couple to the Elkhart, IN area in Oct. 2018. We would like to spend 2 or 3 days, during the 2nd week of October, sightseeing in Chicago area before heading south to US 36 and on to Denver. We would like to stay in our coaches, somewhat near Chicago, and venture out in our toads to see the area. However, I have been unable to identify an RV campground, preferably with full hook-ups, in the Chicago area, say within 20 miles, that would fulfill these parameters. Obviously, we would want to feel our coaches are safe while we venture out.
Any guidance/advice that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Maybe not as close as you wanted, but I have stayed at the casino in Joliet: RV Park | Great Location & Free Breakfast | Hollywood Casino Joliet

You can also take the train into Chicago: https://metrarail.com/maps-schedules...tations/JOLIET

probably nothing anywhere close to the 'heart' of town, but if you want to 'dry camp' for an overnight, or two, the huge McCormick Place marshalling yard allows overnighting for RVs for $20...they have security, a huge lot, and an uber is even easier than you own toad, since you would need a place to park it when you venture into town anyway.

We did this for a night at the House of Blues for a David Crowder and friends concert. Parked at the yard, took an uber, enjoyed our time, and took one back. Our teen boys stayed at the coach, with the yorkie. The trains come by frequently, but you get used to it.

Like everyone else said, maybe not as close as you want. Bull frog pond or Blackwell state Park. I've been to both of these and they are pretty good. Bull frog has a water issue in that when they put in the water system they never filtered it... Very hard, the campground is fine. Blackwell is not open except the weekend. Hope that helps

This is probably your best bet. It's pretty decent, safe, on your way, and you really don't want to take your toad into Chicago anyway.

We have stayed at Chicago Northwest KOA near Union, IL. We drove to Crystal Lake train station about 30 mins away and took the train into Chicago. Chicago has a great public trans system that I think is superior to driving in the city. You can get to places faster and no parking hassles.

Appreciate your input LarryJB. As of now I plan to stay at Joliet, Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort, only because staying further south integrates better with my departure from the area. I was unaware of this park, Chicago Northwest KOA, but will file it for future reference. Thank you

Look at North West Indiana, still not close, but easier to get to the city, and when your done, your past the city. 57 or 55 into your the city become parking lots, look at taking the Indiana toll road to the Illinois Sky way, not cheap and the that’s why less traffic, till it dumps out on 94, but a lot closer to downtown.
Or take the train in from Ogden dunes.

Now there’s a Yogi Bear cg near there, but I don’t know if they overnight,
There’s also a cg in Crete, Illinois, right off 394 that’s a straight shot to the city with out tolls

Hello, there is a county park about 45 miles west of Chicago right off of I-88 you might want to consider. It is a nice park, that a lot of people use for visiting Chicago and surrounding area.
Big Rock Campground

Hope this helps.
