Any recommendations for a CG near Crystal River in Homosassa Florida? We are planning on going the first week of May for our shakedown cruise. Thanks in advance.

Hi Slothsaway,
I've been in the area many times. There are two CGs I'll recommend and one I ask you to stay away from.
Please consider:
1. Rock Crusher CG at 352-564-9340
2. Homosassa Carefree RV Resort at 800-471-3722
Due to management attitude problems, stay away from Crystal Isles RV Resort.
When you go ask the CG folks how to get to Dan's Clam Shack. The food is okay, but the Key Line Pie is award winning. FYI, cash only no CC for payment. An outstanding place to eat is Neon Leon's in Homosassa. Call to see what entertainment is performing and make your reservations for the night with the entertainment you like the best.
If you want other things to do, while there, post here or PM me.

Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park is the best in the area hands down. We winter here(still here 'til April 30). A state park type atmosphere with natural vegetation, spacious sites, pet friendly, full hook-ups, 60+ channel cable tv included, free WiFi reaching most of the park, great pool/clubhouse. Is equal distance between Homosassa and Crystal River. Dan's is but 5 minutes away. But if you want a real taste of local culture, great steamed shrimp, and cold beer be sure to hit "The Freezer" in Homosassa. You won't regret RCC and oh yes, NO "no-see-ums" in RCC.

Thanks for the inputs...I have looked at both and found that carefree RV gives a 50% discount to Active duty, reserve and retired military. I am leaning towards them and will do a drive through at rock crusher for future reference...plus we live in JAX so it could be a nice alternative. The DH really wants to go snorkeling in the river...do you know if the manatees will be in the area or good access points that do not require a tour. Sounds like the clam shack and freezer will also be on our list of places to visit. If you can think of any other must do/see...let me know! Thanks Again, Dave

Hi Slothsaway,
It will be a bit late in the year for the Manatees, en-mass. Snorkeling in the Homosassa River may not be possible without renting a boat, etc. All the property along the river is private property.
The resort you are considering is in a very good location. About 1/2 mile from the resort is the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Go to Welcome to Florida State Parks and read about it.
Neon Leon's restaurant is about 1/4 mile away on the same road. Go to Neon Leon's Zydeco Steakhouse and read about it.
When exiting the CG, turn right. Go about 1/2 mile and park in the State Parking lot. Cross the street and go to the right of the State Park building entrance. There will be a small building to the right. In this building are all the brochures about what to do in the area. The people are also very helpful.
