Camping near the Big Apple

Soon we will be in the NYC area and would like to do some sight seeing. My plan is to find a campground nearby and take the commuter train into the city. Do you have any suggestions on where to camp?

I really like Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain state park, but camping options are limited.
Access to NYC is just what you are looking for and you will also be close to WestPoint.
Just not sure if they have anything that will accommodate your coach.

Your ONLY real option with public transportation convenient:
Liberty Harbor RV Park

What dates are you going? The Pope will be in town towards the end of September, the Giants AND Jets are home that weekend too. That will make a bad traffic and mass transit situation worse.

There are other camping options if you want to drive your toad closer to the city and take a bus or the PATH train.

Last year we camped @ black bear campground located in Florida,N.Y. We drove to a little town called Beacon and road the commuter train to Grand Central station. It was about a 30 minute drive from the campground to the Beacon station. Everything worked out great,we actually went back the next day and did it again. The campground office has info about Beacon and other options to get to the city.
