Camping spots in Southern California

Hello I moved to San Diego from Alaska. Is there any tricks for getting a campsite? They have beautiful campgrounds but full! Ever since Feb, any guidance would be appreciated!

Lived there most of my life and it is a chore to find good campsite unless you pay at a private campgrounds or drive 6 or more hours. State campgrounds you will need to reserve I think 6 months out and you may need to stay up late to go on-line to get a spot especially in the summer time. I'm sure other here will have some hints. One of our favorites is Crystal Cove State Park, camped there a few times.

Have you tried Reserve America? Yes you have to plan ahead for weekends but occasionally you may find some mid-week openings.

Also campsite photos is a good tool for checking out sites in advance.

There's a KOA in Chula Vista.
We've been going there for twenty years now. Highly recommend it. Down side is it's a little pricey. They do have monthly rates though.

OP - For close to town getaways, check out Santee Lakes. Laguna Mountain has a State Park for dry camping. Borrego Springs also has a State Park. Temecula area has from private to state parks. For asphalt camping, Silver Strand has a campground. If small enough, Carlsbad State Beach is cool. A few campgrounds around the Julian area are cool too.

And yeah, depending upon the time of year, a crap shoot on getting into some of these!
