Camping Suggestions Near Erie PA.

Were planning a summer (Aug) trip that includes a 4 night stop somewhere near Erie PA. The main reason to stop in this area is to do a day at Waldameer Amusement Park.

We do 90% of our camping at state or federal campgrounds. There doesn't appear to be any state parks in this area with camping. Right now I have a New York State Park zeroed on called Lake Erie State Park near Dunkirk NY. It's about 45-50 miles from the amusement park. (DW thought it was kind of far...)
Would like to find something a little closer either private or state. Has anyone stayed at Lake Erie SP? I noticed there was not many shady sites, and most of the electric sites were 15 amp. 15 amp? Didn't we just ring in the new year (2014). How can a 15 amp electric service ever run a AC unit.

Any suggestions....

We usually like trees and shade,,,hence your camping that brings us to state parks....and for the elbow room.

Try this site. Sara If you look at the top of the second picture, you will see Waldemere park. Can't get any closer than that! I've never camped there , but it's always busy.

Yes, I agree....From awhile back I heard about the negative reviews about Sara's. I just did a Bing Map view and the few non-seasonal sites are packed in. Even their websites says you might not even get a picnic table and bring extra extension cords....I'll pass...

The Lampe Marina Campground from a Bing map I would say basically your in and around a parking lot. The sites look larger, the yes, you do get a picnic table. And the price is not bad for a modern looking place for a Sun - Thursday stay. Just no trees. The reviews were actually fairly good for Lampe...on RVparkreviews. Thanx Palehorse89 for giving me that link...It also backed up the negative stuff about Sara's.

Greetings from Pittsburgh Pa. We camp at Erie Pa several times a year because it is so close to home and so much to do in Erie. The campground we stay at are the KOA Erie and Sparrow pond on Peach st. sparrow pond is approx 15 minutes from the beach and the KOA is approx 5 minutes from the beach. the KOA has several things for the kids. Pedal cars. Swimming pools. Fishing, every night they play a movie in the picnic covered pavilion. The spots are a little tighter than sparrow pond and the campground is a little closer to the roadway. Sparrow pond is a lot more relaxing and low key. More room at the camp sight. They have a large pool and a pond for fishing. Kids can ride there bikes on the property. Large campground and spread out. They have a large activity center with a arcade and pool tables. These two campgrounds are the best on their area.
