Canon City Royal Gorge RV Park Suggestions?

Thinking about spending a few days around Canon City, CO and Royal Gorge area in a few weeks. Anyone have some suggestions for good places to stay or things to see and do (besides the bridge and train ride of course)?

I tried searching the forum and did not really find anything on places to stay. Private or state parks are OK, I prefer state parks if available. Not being familiar with that area, I did not really see any state parks around?

Thanks for any suggestions and experiences, first-hand knowledge is always nice to have!

I visited Canon City last spring and had a nice time. I'd suggest the train ride for a scenic trip, good food served too.

If you Google 'Canon City campgrounds' you'll find a few choices in the area. The Dept. of Interior BLM has campgrounds and areas to boondock too.

Just drove through the town last week on my way to Lake City To do some offroading for two weeks. I heard the royal gorge is a royal gouge to the pocket book, but this is second hand. The canyon that run along 50 to salida co. has a lot of rafting and there is offroading in the area you want to go to. Lake city is not much farther and Woodlake park is a good campground lots to do in this area big big mountains and jeeps to rent or sxs. Its a lot cooler temp too. We did about 800 miles of off roading in this area. Hope this helps!

For a fun activity (and a bit heart pounding) drive along Skyline Drive. No trailers or motor homes. Check it out on you tube. Really cool.

A few years ago when we were in the area we stayed here
Mountaindale Cabins & RV Resort. #1 rated cabin resort & campgrounds in Colorado. Best campground for camping in the Springs.
Realy enjoyed the CG and the Folks could not of been more helpful or friendlier. About 30 miles to canyon City.

And they are Passport America

We loved the Gorge and the train, plus a couple of rafting trips. Also interesting is the Starlite Classic Campground that has a lot of restored RVs... Home

We also visited the Museum of Colorado Prisons... Museum of Colorado Prisons and took a day trip drive to Monarch Pass where it was snowing in June. There is an aerial tram at Monarch Pass that is fun to ride.

From the windows of the gift shop at Monarch, we observed a diesel pusher towing a Tahoe burn to the ground while the fire engine sirens echoed up the mountain but arrived too late.

We stayed at an RV park that was right at the Royal Gorge Bridge. We could see the Bridge from the campground. Can not recall the name of the campground. We did not have reservations.

We toured the Molly Katherine gold mine in Cripple Creek. They take you 1000' down an elevator shaft into the mine. At the bottom they have small rail cars that you ride to view the way gold mining was done back in that time. For us that was a very neat side trip.
