Carlsbad, NM

We are going out west starting the end of April. One of our stops will be Carlsbad, NM to see the caverns. I've read the road to Carlsbad KOA is very bad ...and some mixed reviews on it. Trip Advisor is pretty positive over all. Anyone with first hand experience? Has the road been fixed? Thanks, Lynn

Cave :: 56deg closed toe shoes.
OK park, all gravel. Somewhat off the main road. Traffic noise, quiet at night.
Lots of perms here.
Very windy the first ½ of trip to here. Route 180 is a long long lonely road.
There is not much of anything to do in this town.
Went to the movie saw Oz, The Great and Powerful. Very nice theater.
3-21. 43 deg, mostly cloudy. Went to Carlsbad Caverns. Very nice & big cavern.
Real windy this PM with blowing dust.

Just notes from our journal on trip in 2013. Hope this helps you.
Hal

We stay at Brantley Lake State Park when touring the caverns.

Keep in mind that if you continue west to Benson, Arizona Kartchner Caverns State Park is a winner. It's completely different from Carlsbad in that it's still a growing cave. Therefore, the formations are dripping and forming. The lighting is fantastic and the tours awesome. The attached campground is in a beautiful setting and suitable for big rigs.

I was there this last summer and to tell you the truth I don't think the road leading into the KOA was overly bad. If it was it would stick out in my mind.

Are you asking about a state highway leading into Carlsbad? Which one? Or are you asking about the actual campground drive?
