We are staying 5 nights in Chama in Late June, what are your suggestions on anything and everything? 38ft Class A/Jeep toad. We love taking off road drives too! Coming from Phoenix. Thanks!

We stayed here Rio Chama RV park last August. It's an older facility with mature trees and a small creek... ask for a creekside site! The steam train runs along the edge of the park and crosses the creek very near those camped on the creek. It's not a "glamping" experience but very scenic and convenient to the train if that's one of your planned activities. We were there in our '42 Sig towing a GMC 2500 and had plenty of room. 5 days is a very short trip. I would take a day trip to Taos (about 100 miles from Chama), then stop at the Ojo Caliente Mineral Spa for a mud spa, hot springs with calming minerals, a massage, and finally a romantic dinner. Hwy 64 is a beautiful drive.

If you cannot find any 4x4 adventures, the Great Sand Dunes NP is about 2 hours away, and it offers Medano Pass road.

Looks like a great place! We had always bypassed Chama when traveling from Santa Fe to Silverton, but may have stop there sometime. Pretty pictures.

There is plenty ofgood 4X4 roads just across the state line in Colorado.

Take hwy 17 out over Chama when you get past CumbersPass start looking if you tale to some of the people in the camp ground they will fill you in pack a lunch and have fun.

When you ride the train you will stop for lunch at Osier Station this is a great place to take your 4X4 to.

I believe the best ride is to take the Chama to Antonito by motor coach; return by train.

We stated at Rio Chama RV park for 4 weeks in 2013 and we have planes to go back this year if you are there July the 4 the town has the best fire works show I have been to.

I am very interested in more info on this area. I mostly boondock. I have a 4X4, live in Phx. and most importantly ROLL TIDE!

There are plenty of boondock sites just across the state line in Colorado there are some real good sites around the Cumbers Pass, good view of the valley and the rail road.

If you have time, move over to the Durango, Ouray or Montrose area so you can drive the awesome Jeep trails at 12,000' elevation out of Silverton.

We always stayed in Silverton, boondocking on South Mineral Creek BLM but there are RV parks there, also. Keep in mind that getting to Silverton with an RV necessitates driving on Hwy 550 which is steep and curvy. It depends on your mountain driving confidence. Many RVers do it and we love the drive with our 40' motorhome. If you stay in Ouray, Montrose or Durango you'd only have to drive the Jeep. It's well worth it for the trails!

The authenic Old West town of Silverton has a terrific July 4 parade and fireworks but it's also very packed with RVers. Plan ahead.

We stayed there for 3 days last June. Park had lots of trees for shade. Just be sure to take insect repellent. The mosquitos almost ate our grandson alive.

We used to always stay at South Mineral too! Love it there. The last couple of times we stayed at a small rv park in the center of town. Nice to be able to walk to things. We drove back to south mineral when we were there last Sept. Going back this sept too!
