We loved James Island Park and it seems to be a favorite among members.

James Island is certainly a good choice in Charleston, especially if you like a lot of park like activities (bikes, hikes, bugs and mud). We prefer a quieter (more adult?) environment and typically stay at Oak Plantation. Either would be a good choice depending on your needs.

James Island County Park was great for us. There is an enclosed doggy park with water access that the dogs just loved. It is about the size of two football fields and fenced. The opposite side of the lake is not fenced if you have a "swimmer."

James Island is a great park. Another option if it's full is the KOA in Mt. Pleasant. Stayed there after Christmas 2011 and we had a very pleasant experience. It's close in proximity to your planned excursions. BTW if you are there over the weekend, Be sure to visit the City (straw) Market in downtown Charleston.
We love Charleston,

Thank you, I think we can arrange to be there over a weekend. I will check on the KOA as well

We were in Charleston this past October for our 40th anniversary. We stayed at the Charleston/Mt Pleasant KOA in MT Pleasant. It was one of the best campgrounds we have stayed at in a long time. Don't stay at the KOA in North Charleston! It is run downed and there was a murder that took place at the North Charleston KOA when we were there.

We just stayed at the Oak Plantation Campground on March 31. Very nice with big sites and quiet environment.
Did go see the Hunley. It was very interesting but use your GPS or get good directions because it is located on the old Navy yard.
