Hello-

Anyone spent any time in Cherry Creek State Park Campground in Aurora, Colorado? We're planning on spending a week there this summer (2019), and wondering if anyone has any advice as to which sites I should try to prioritize within the campground. We're going to be in a 34' motorhome and our friends will have a bumper pull 25' trailer.

Cherry Creek is a great place. You need to book as soon as your dates are 6 months away. That is when the reservation window opens and it fills up fast. Try and book a site with trees/shade to the West. The afternoon sun is long lasting and can get very hot. I always look at the sites on Google Maps and use that as a guide.

Make sure you do not go over a holiday weekend unless you are fine with not leaving the park. The line to get in the park can be hours long because once the park reaches capacity they don't let anyone in until someone leaves. That will include you.

Nice park but crowded, as are all the state parks in the area, especially on weekends. Chatfield park on the south end of town may be easier to access the down town area if that is in your plans.

We're going to book as soon the website allows us. It looks like the website allows one to book on a rolling 6 month window, and we're still a few months away from being able to book.

Are there any bad sites at that campground we should avoid? Or sites/loops that are better than others?

Super information from the previous posts. My wife and I have camped there the last 5 years but mainly at the end of September. We have always reserved spots in either the Coyote Loop or the Pioneer Loop. Both of these loops are full hookups. We really prefer the Coyote Loop along the South side of loop because of the shade, it can get hot in Denver! The Abilene, Buffalo, and Gold Rush loops are full hookups I believe as well. Gold Rush doesn't have much shade, everything else is kind of hit and miss. A great place to camp with a lot of deer around. Pelicans are there toward the end of September. But as mentioned previously, book as soon as you can as it gets booked full pretty quick. We will probably go for year #6 next summer. Enjoy it.

Thanks very much. I used to live in Colorado back in the late 90's so I remember the hot, clear days well. I miss it actually : )

There aren't any "tricks" to making sure one gets a site 6 months in advance, is there? I've been on a couple of campground reservation sites where I am on the website at EXACTLY the time sites supposedly open, only to find out that somehow they're all taken up- usually by someone scamming the system by making an earlier reservation then "sliding" the reservation to a later date before the regular window opens or similar. I don't want to scam the system, don't get me wrong.

Since you are spending a week I assume you would want FHU? Below pic is site 142 in the Buffalo Loop. Loved the RV park and we also loved the site we were in.

twojayhawks, I noticed that the yard hydrants, in the Buffalo Loop, were wrapped in a heat tape or some sort of heating device probably for winter camping at Cherry Creek. I had not noticed this in my earlier walks, in the previous years, through the loop.

ualdriver, I do not know of any "tricks" in getting these reservations other than doing it as early as you can.

While I am definitely not partial to brown and tan and gold coaches, your coach looks so nice! I think it’s the white in the back that makes it look so good.

Thanks. We are not really those people that take pictures of our RV every where we go. My wife does a photo album of every trip so naturally the RV gets in a few.
