Clear Lake, California - Recommendations?
My son is planning to go to Clear Lake with a TT. Any recommendations on where to stay? Looking for something next to the water, has beach access for my grandson. They have a wave runner too. Nothing fancy.

Clearlake has served as a weekend retreat and then retirement location for many in my family for the past 60 years... for better or worse.
A couple of years ago while full timing in our 40DP, I decided to swing by there to see some family I hadn't seen in a long time. Wow. We could find very little on the west, north and east sides of the lake. Ended up staying at a place in Nice where we had to squeeze in between many unkempt permanent trailer set ups and it really appeared to be quite a "dive".
The next year we stayed well away from the lake on the south side at a Yogi Bear park which was nice... but a long way from the water.
It's been very disappointing to see how the entire area has gone steadily downhill with each passing decade. Hopefully, your son is familiar with the area and knows what to expect so he won't be too disappointed.

If you have a smart phone, get the app, RVParky. Look up be city and see hat's available. Our group is going up in November to Edgewater Resort on the south side of the lake. It's at 6420 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville, California.

Not sure if there is much of a beach, might be. It is right on the water and does have a nice swimming pool too.

You can use Google maps to locate all the RV parks.
Then you can zoom in with Google's satellite view and check out the park.
I do that on every park we go to so I know what's what.
For what it's worth we went to Clear lake about five years ago. Never again. I'm sure at one time it was nice but I think it's past it's prime.

My family's been there since the early 50's. It's gone downhill but IMHO it was never without the problems of heavy algae build up in the water and transient/drug issues.
Too bad too. It's a beautiful area.

Here's something else to consider. As said it can have quite an algae build up, this is due to the fact the lake is actually quite shallow and our hot summers heat the water up all the way down. When the algae blooms it can smell quite bad, not a nice thing when camped waterside. Being as California is in a serious drought right now the lake levels will all drop drastically, already are in fact, so that smell will get real bad this year!
Unless he has a specific reason for going to Clear Lake I would definately stay away from there. When the water levels drop and the water heats up there's all kinds of bacteria as well and it's not fun, especially for kids. Swimmers itch & leeches nice combo!

I used to go there a lot about 20 years ago and it wasn't all the nice then. I can only imagine what it's like now.

No one has mentioned the state park near Kelysyville. We stayed at Edgewater once. It was ok but not much. I grew up in the area and wanted to find a nice rv park to frequent but never found something I would want to stay in long.
