CLOSED and OFF-LIMITS until further notice.

Lunga Park (Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA) recreation area

is closed until further notice due to unexploded ordnance.

Anybody have any idea when it might reopen?

Thanks.

Take care,
Stu

I suspect the disposal units will make short work of it.. I know for non-military stuff the civilian disposal units do.. but then I used to have coffee with the busiest civilian bomb squad in the United States.

It should reopen shortly after you hear a big explosion.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I had reservations last April that were cancelled for UXO removal. Been gone since then until this week. We were looking forward to a return to Lunga Lake. Hoping that it won't be long before it reopens.

Take care,
Stu

Me thinks that once they find one UXO they have to sweep the entire area for possible signs of others. It could take months.

I like Lunga, especially The Pines. I love parallel parking in #34 (Old #4).

The Pines is our favorite, too. I'm looking at a saved .pdf map of the campground from a year ago. #4 was the first spot we camped with our 41' coach. It took the infamous "19 point turn" to get backed into that spot without scraping the top corners on the "well worn" trees adjacent to spot #3. When we left, I noticed that it was just one easy turn out of the spot #4 up the hill and on our way. The second time we parked there, I just backed around the corner and down the hill and made that same (abeit in reverse) turn into the spot. Easy smeasy!

At any rate, as you suggested, I wouldn't be surprised to see it take some time for the entire area to be swept for UXO.

Take care,
Stu

Stu,
We must be working off different maps. Site #4 is the second site going into The Pines. The first site is a pull in, then old #4, now 34. Take a right at #34 and go down to now 47 and 48. Past #34 to the left about 100 yards are two more sites opposite each other.

#48 is now become our equal favorite. It is at the bottom of the hill as you take a right and it is also a pull in for hook-ups. However, their are railroad ties at the front that will need to be watched when dumping air. I just make sure I'm not over it in any way. The electrical hook-up for that site is all the way to the front as you pull in, and about 10 feet further. I'm glad I had the extension cord as I needed about 5-6 feet extra (which I had in the extension cord). Water and sewer were appropriately placed when you pulled in.

The old #4, now #34, we made a U turn and parked so our steps would be on the lake side. The electricity for that one is on a pole over the drop and toward the lake. My 30 foot cord just reached coming under the coach.

I do like lunga, but it is very far from everything. About a 15-20 minute drive to the mainside PX and Commissary.

Just for giggles, I called the PAO and was told there is no "end-date" for the UXO issue.

Hi Wayne,

I just downloaded a map (current?) that fits your description.

We live close enough to MCB Quantico that we go to Lunga for the peaceful isolation. OK, I know...the quiet is occasionally disturbed by the sounds of various forms of gunfire. Some complain about the noise, we feel comforted knowing that because freedom does, indeed, come at a cost, perhaps a few more training rounds down range might save the life of one of our defenders of freedom. A little noise for us; a much higher price for others.

Thanks for your service, Marine. Thanks for sharing "your" MCB with a former squid.

Take care,
Stu

PAO! What a thought?

Seriously, can you imagine the outcry when one campground kid gets injured (or worse) by EXPLODING formerly unexploded ordnance?

We'll, perhaps, not enjoy the beauty of Lunga Lake (Reservoir) for a long, long time.

Take care,
Stu
