Cody, Wy to where????

We changed our plans from going to Dubois, WY to going to Cody, WY for 3 nights due to the fire near Dubois ... so, need to find somewhere else to go to for 2 nights after Cody. We have reservations at Fort Collins, so something south of Cody is preferred. Any suggestions?

Three nights at Cody is not bad. The Buffalo Bill complex is worth two days and there is a wild mustang refuge, plus a lot more near by.

Besides the attractions at the museum, you've got the East entrance to Yellowstone, or take your toad and go via the Beartooth Hwy to Cooke City and the NE YNP entrance, through the Lamar Valley and south over Dunraven Pass to Yellowstone Lake and out the East entrance back to Cody.

Have you already been to Yellowstone and Grand Teton Nat'l Parks - right next door to Cody?

Yes, we have been to Bryce, Grand Tetons, Glacier, Zion, Grand Canyon and currently in Yellowstone. We are going to be heading south after Cody. Have reservations in several places in Colorado for Mid August through September. Looking at maybe doing Custer, Wy after Cody - thoughts?

There's no Custer, WY. There's a Casper, WY and a Custer, SD.

How about a scenic drive to Fort Collins? Take WY789 south to CO13 to Craig. Then east on 40 through Steamboat Springs and pick up 14 into Fort Collins.

Custer State Park in SD is a GREAT place. It's very close to Mt. Rushmore and a two day drive from Cody.

Sorry, I meant Casper, WY. We had spent a long day visiting sites here, and I was trying to answer on my phone app .... obviously, I need to pay a bit more attention to what I'm doing! I have read some of the posts here talking about the drive between Cody and Casper ... sounds like a nice, scenic drive. Think we will do that.

We actually enjoyed a couple of days in Cheyenne (stayed at AB Camping) and it's on your way. We made a trip over to Vedauwoo (saw some moose), took the tour of Cheyenne and learned it's fascinating history, and found a great little hole in the wall restaurant. Cody to Custer is 352 miles, less than a 6 hr drive. I've done it many times, many routes, never taken 2 days.

Casper, WY has a nice explanation of the major pioneer trails that went through WY at the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center. On the way from Cody to Casper is Thermopolis, known for it's extinct geysers and live hot springs you can swim or soak. Also close by is the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, a well done museum and dig site.

14 miles from Cody on US 14A is the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, a WWII Japanese interment camp.

We also enjoyed the Cheyenne area. They have a good museum if that is of interest to you. A nice park with one of the big old boy steam locomotives... (in a Sander's voice 'It's HHHHuuuuuuuggggggeee').

We spent two nights at the KOA, yes at KOA prices, but a well run park. (And, we were on an altered route, diving quickly South from our planned route, trying to out run a forecasted few days of surprise winter storms. I think this was in 2014. We were not alone in altering our plans to dodge to the South, and when I called as we got closer to the Cheyenne, the KOA was the only place that had an opening for our size coach. Check RV Parks Reviews, and you will find other parks in the area too, that from memory, also had good reviews, and I think a bit lower prices(?).)

In 2012, we spent one night in Casper on our way to change our Domicile to SD. Due to a football came the wife wanted to watch, we did not get out and about at all in Casper. So I can not give you a fair opinion about it for a few days stay!

Travel safe,
Smitty
