Colorado in 5 days

We have five days to spend in Colorado this summer. Most likely we will be visiting in early to mid August if that makes a difference. Would love hear what some of your best suggestions to see are.

Durango. Telluride, Cortez -

Durange - ride the Durango/Silverton RR

Telluride - shop, sightsee, free gondola system

Cortez - Mesa Verde National Park

I did these things last year. We stayed across from the Mesa Verde National Park and then moved to Priest gulch RV Park (near Telluride). You can see pics in my trip report:

6 weeks on the road - Visiting Colorado

I guess it would depend on where you're coming from. However, if coming from the west definitely spend your short time in the Cortez/Durango/Silverton areas. Beautiful scenery and lots to do.

i would suggest you stay to the higher elevations as it will be cooler.
estes park park is a great suggestion but i am prejudice as i am sitting in a rv park there right now looking at snow covered peaks and a raging river plus was stuck in a traffic jam downtown today for a herd of elk approx 10 cow and calves

I agree.............

Durango Silverton RR is awesome, very nice day.

Mesa Verde, not so pretty, but very interesting. Take the rangers tour.

Estes Park, Rcky Mtn Natl park, awesome....

Pikes Peak, ride the train up, or drive, cool experience..

Steamboat is fun on July 4th, very patriotic...

Dinosaur Natl,,, again interesting....

Better re plan, you need 2 weeks!

Definitely depends where you're starting/finishing. As suggestesd above, Durango/Cortez/Telluride are beautiful, with lots to do that will please every family member.

If coming from the east, Grand Junction has the Colorado National Monument - a beautiful drive, with great scenery. Check out the James Robb Campground near Fruita - nice location near the Colorado River. Heading east from Grand Junction, there's Aspen/Vail/Breckenridge. Lots to see and do!

If you're coming in from the east, then Denver/Boulder/Estes Park, and a trip south to Colorado Springs for the Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, and USAF Academy.

You'll have a hard time doing all you wish in just 5 days. I've lived in CO for decades, and I'm still exploring this fantastic state! Enjoy! And, don't be surprised if you want to come back...

I would add, in July/August, we can get pretty heavy monsoon rains in Colorado. Jut so you'll know....
