September in Pagosa offers some fun things to do. The ColorFest is a celebration of the fall colors, and a hot air balloon festival. It's a combination of food, wine and microbrews, along with hot air balloons. Hot air balloons tend to like to land on our property, thanks to the winds. Kind of a mini-version of the Albuquerque balloon festival.

And, early September offers the Four Corners Folk Fest, on top of Reservoir Hill in downtown Pagosa.

If the timing of your trip(s) allows, don't miss these events!

We were in SW Colorado last year in mid September and the aspen color was beautiful. We stayed at the KOA in Ouray and did day trips to Telluride, Silverton, Lake City with our jeep. Mid-September was perfect.

Love this thread! We are going to be spending a month in Colorado ...starting with Fort Collins then to Tiger Run at Breckenridge then have reservations for 7 days at Mountain View in Creede and then moving to Wolf Creek Run RV for 7 days (Sept. 1 to Sept 8th). Really looking forward to it ... thanks for all the recommendations

Best route

We plan on going from Woodland Park to Grand Junction in mid/late June in our 30' MH. Best route ideas?

It really depends on what your interests are, what you want to see, & how much time you have. If you're just interested in getting from point A to B, the simplest route would be, 24 west from Woodland Park to Buena Vista, then south on 285 to 50, and west on 50 all the way to Grand Junction.

But there are many variations to stretch that 6 hr drive into 6 days or more of exploring the great state of Colorado.

Salida Co. is just east of Poncha Springs and they have an RV friendly Wal-Mart that is appox 5 miles on the left. Salida's downtown region is rustic and full of antique stores and also on the Arkansas river, however, I would suggest taking the toad, as the streets are narrow. We had to park aways away and walk as we too are over 60'. Another Wal-Mart is in Montrose and they are RV friendly as well. The next Wally World is in Durango and it is NOT RV friendly, small parking lot. Just another piece of advice that I read somewhere, when your headed back, and if you take route 550 south to Albuquerque, do not do it in late evening as it seems to be the road of choice for DUI drivers and wildlife. Have a great trip.

PagosaJoe: We plan to drive through from Santa Fe to Durango. Unfortunately, can't stay overnight on this trip, but wondering if there is somewhere we could park our MH for a few hours in Pagosa Springs and enjoy lunch etc downtown this summer? Thank you,

Parking in downtown Pagosa is a bit of a challenge. It's a very old town, and most side streets are narrow. IF you can find a spot on the main street through town (Highway 160), you may be able to park there. I've seen large class A RVs parked along Main Street (Highway 160) from time-to-time.

There are some larger places near restaurants and a farmer's market as you first come into town from the east, but availability may be tough to find. I've attached a photo showing the east side of town you'll first come to approaching from Santa Fe. There are places near restaurant parking lots at that end of town. Truckers park there as well.

In the larger photo below, I've highlighted a couple of lots - large open areas, not specifically parking lots - that may work for you. These will put you closer to town, near the river, and with easier access to the central business district, shopping, hot springs, and restaurants.

Walmart, on the west end of town, allows temporary parking - no over night - on the north side of their parking area. Turn left from Highway 160 at the stoplight to enter Walmart.

Be aware that if you want to depart heading west, you'll have to exit the Walmart lot to the west, then turn left and left again to end up on Highway 160 toward Durango - that will take you back to the stoplight. Otherwise, there is a one way exit on the west end of Walmart that will force you to head east again.

Hope that helps!
