We've driven that route towing a few times, and I can't remember any negatives, only that there was great scenery and that there were lots of great areas to wander off the main road and explore. For some reason people in my neck of the woods don't pick Grand Junction as a destination very often, which I've never understood. There is so much to see in do in that area. Sadly, due to unforeseen health issues we just cancelled our reservations for the Fruita Section of the Colorado River state park there in Grand Junction. We had planned to stay there for a week this month as part of our early season travels.
If you're in to mountain biking at all, there are some great trails in the Grand Junction area. One that comes to mind right away is the Horsethief trail. I had to ride that one a couple years back when I learned that is the trail my latest mountain bike was named after. Should you choose to ride it, don't be afraid to walk the rough sections. While it's described as mostly intermediate, it has many areas that challenge even the really advanced riders. I haven't noticed that area described as a mountain biking mecca much, but it really is a fantastic area to ride in if that's something you enjoy.
