Columbus Ga. to Key West

Hello all,
we are still new to RVing; we have taken a few trips but have gone north and now we are discussing going south. We are considering a trip that would wind up in Key West, no hurry along the way but we are not sure where to stay while we meander down. We would like to stop along the way and possibly stay a few days at one or two nice campgrounds before we get to Key West. We are planning to stay a few days near Key West before we start back north. We have checked out a few campgrounds near Key West and BlueWater Key sounds very nice if we can get a spot. Our plan is to have our list of "preferred" campgrounds and call ahead while we are on the road. Please let us know if this sounds doable this time of year, and if you have any recommendations for campgrounds along the way we would really appreciate the help.

Happy Trails to all and many thanks for all of the great information we continue to get from IRV2.

I would like to add that the timeframe that we are discussing is the two weeks after Christmas.

Hi bobnshirlene,
Christmas starts the heavy RV season in all parts of Florida. For me, I would not start without reservations. Before I make any suggestions, can you provide the things that interest you, time available for the entire trip and some of the areas you may have already visited.

Thanks for responding Gary, we have been to the north Florida area quite a bit, we have been to Key West twice, Disney World and Sanibel Island several times all before we got our RV. We are planning on the trip lasting about 10 days. We like to walk, ride our bikes, fish, and snorkel. We sort of figured that reservations were needed we just wondered if making reservations two or three days before we arrive would work or would you say make firm plans and make all reservations before we leave home?

Hi bobnshirlene,
It sounds like you are a well traveled Florida tourist. You know it is over 500 miles from the GA/FLA border to Key West. For a total of 10 days and taking your preference to "walk, ride our bikes, fish, and snorkel" for me, I'd do the following:

1. During travel days, overnight stop where ever you happen to be around 4 PM? During your lunch break, determine about where you'll be around 4 PM and call ahead for an overnight stop along I75 or the Florida Turnpike. There are many places that have a spot or two for overnighters.

2. Plan on staying a mile marker 39 in the Keys. This is Sunshine Key RV Resort Their contact information is 305-872-2217. The resort is about a mile and half past 7 mile bridge. I've stayed here many times, attended and hosted rallies at this resort. The reason I make this suggestion is, for me, Key West is great, for one day, maybe two at the most. There are just too many other things to do to pay the high prices in the immediate Key West area. Within a mile of the resort is Behia Honda State Park. There you can hike, walk, check out the Key Deer, snorkel, etc. Just North or South of the resort are all the usual Key amenities and things to do. + or - 10 miles you name it, it is there. If you go and if you like Key Lime pie, at the North end of seven mile bridge there is a restaurant with the absolute best Key Lime pie. Their food is also good, but the Key Lime pie is the trademark.

As to reservations, where ever you stay for the bulk of your trip, advance reservations are a must. For the overnight stops, I risk a call around lunch time.

If you let me know where you think you will be each night on travel days, I can provide some suggestions for overnight stops.

Bob & Shirlene:

G'morning from Casa Grande, AZ. As real RV full timers, we haunt Florida quite a bit since our son and his family live near Tampa. We've been down on the Keys quite often, and we absolutely LOVE the area.

Was wondering whether 10 days to Key West and back to Columbus is an absolute, or are you able to extend at all?? That's a pretty tight time frame and gives ya little time to kick back and enjoy the things you sound like you'd like to do. Even the "shortest" route is 740 miles one way (1,480 rnd. trip) and that takes ya through the middle of Florida not along the more picturesque coastal areas.

Just wondering if ya can extend since it kinda makes a difference regarding stopping suggestion along the way.

Thanks to all for the great advice and suggestions. Chickadee, unfortunately 10 days is our max this time. We may reconsider and not try to go all the way to Key West, we have been there twice and Gary is right, a day or two at the most in Key West is plenty, but we do love the Keys with all of the beauty and nature. We have found ourselves really trying to do too much trying to see all of the sites around and not relaxing and enjoying the campgrounds that we have stayed in. We both just retired a few years ago and we are trying to learn to pace ourselves more and enjoy some of the beautiful campgrounds and wonderful friendly people that we meet along the way. We have even discussed Fort Wilderness at Disney as a destination to enjoy the campground and activities; we have been to the parks several times so they aren't a high priority. We will definitely take all of your suggestions into consideration as we finalize our trip. Chickadee, we have never been to Arizona, but it is definitely on our bucket list, it looks like a beautiful state to visit.

Thanks again for your help, hope to see you on the road.
