We would like to go to Cook Forest State Park this June or July. I was wondering about the sites. Are there any you would recommend or if that is a secret which would you avoid. We like shaded sites and have a PU.

Thanks for any advice you could give.

If you haven't done so already, why don't you go on PA's reservation system and look at the sites?

Pennsylvania DCNR::Your Reservation system for outdoor fun.

If you click on a site, it will provide you with a wealth of information, including the amount of shade the site has. Below is an example of what you'll see:

Site Name: 003 Site Description: Site Attributes:

Accommodates 15 ft trailer : YES
Accommodates 20 ft Trailer : YES
Exposure Shaded : YES
Length of shortest side of spur to the wheelstop (in feet) : 34
Nearby site (another) to campsite : 5
Nearby site to campsite : 4
Nearest Drinking Water : Greater than 300 feet
Nearest Lake/Stream : Greater than 300 feet
Nearest Parking Lot for second car parking : Less than 300 feet
Nearest Playground : Greater than 300 feet
Nearest Swim area : Greater than 1/4 mile
Nearest restroom : Greater than 300 feet
Nearest shower : Greater than 300 feet
Outside the campground loop : YES
Parking is end to end : YES
Tent greater than 8 by 8 : YES
Tent less than or equal to 8x8 : YES
Type - Spur : YES

The above example is a non-electric, non-ADA, No pet site. These would be listed if the site has them, along with the amperage available if the site has electric.

I don't need a pet site but have no problem using one. Those are great pics! I can't wait to see that place.

There's no one on this site that knows Cook Forest SP better than Jim. You'll get a great site if you go by his recomendations. As a matter of fact, if you need any area state park recommendations, start with Jim. He documents the sites & knows the good ones from the bad ones.

I've got about 15 or so SP's in my photo albums, but not near as comprehensive as Jim's.

I just sent you a PM (Personal Message) To retrieve a PM, go to "USER CP" on the top left of this page to get to your PM's. It will have all the good sites listed

Less than half of Cook Forest's sites have electric, so book now. Since you will be coming from Ohio, you will exit I-80 at Route 66, one exit before the Clarion exit. Take 66 north to route 36. Make a right turn. the entrance to the campground is called "Ridge campground". The entrance to the campground kind of sneaks up on you. Once your on 36 and you pass up a mini golf park / waterslides, then one or two more hills, you then enter a dark / thick woods. This is the start of Cooks Forest, You will go down a hill, at the top of the next hill it will level off, the sign is rather small on the left hand side. It's about 500-1000 feet once you crest that hill. If you pass up the entrance there is a turn-a-round at the bottom of the next big hill.

I can attest to that . We've missed the entrance ourselves.

Thanks Jim and Lori. I really appreciate the info. My wife will be very happy as well. It is so nice to be out of a tent. I don't know why we didn't do it sooner. It will make trips like this much more enjoyable.

By the way, we will be in site 238 for Halloween @ Findley, across the street from you. We are meeting up with some old friends from my Boy Scout days.

Thanks Again for all the info. I will keep it under lock and key.

Yes, this year (June) we will be doing Prince Gallitzin State Park just south of Cook Forest (South of I-80) for 7 nights , then move over to Clear Creek State Park 10 miles upstream from Cook Forest for 4 more nights.

Halloween at Findley SP will be the first time we will be there for that weekend. We have done West Branch 4 times, and Mohican twice. My display is made for the night time. All my home made gravestones are painted with black light paint. I'll have a bunch of black lights set up in spots that they can't be seen. But my main display feature of my night timev display is, I have a control box that flickers my trailer lights to the sounds of the spooky music. I'll be getting there on Wed. of that week.
