My wife and I live just outside Shoshone, CA, near the eastern edge of Death Valley National Park. We would very much like to close up the house during the summer months to avoid the astronomical electric bills our A/C creates, and live in our travel trailer in some cooler environment. We would like to stay within 400-500 miles from home, and would prefer a place with hookups (electricity, at least). We also need to stay under 7000 feet elevation (heart). Inexpensive, pretty, and dog-friendly are priorities, stream, lake, or ocean a big bonus!
Are we dreaming, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Shoshone,
Your request is a tall order to fill. With the 500 mile and 7K feet limitation, I have nothing to recommend. With the 7K elevation limit, consider staying on the west side of the Rockies and expand the mileage to get you north to Montana, Idaho, Washington or Canada.

Except for the 500 mile limitation, I'd say Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula.
