Enjoy!
We stayed at the KOA and the tour of the park, Rushmore and Crazy Horse is a must do. You do not have to worry about driving only taking in the views. The guides will tell you so much that you will remember the area for years to come.
Do get out before Sturgis or come after, that's what we did still great weather.

There are a lot of adequate RV parks in the Custer area. The mention of Wheels West brought a lot of fond memories of that area. This a small, but really neat CG. It is just west of the western entrance of Custer State Park. There is a huge amount of history in a small area near there.
Custer's Back Hill Expedition camped along French Creek which runs along the valley from Custer (town) into Stockade Lake in the Park.
There is a grave of one of Custer's troopers right beside the side road that runs behind Wheels West and the café beside it. Apparently he died while they were camped in the meadow while attempting to run the whites out of the Black Hills which were 'given' to the Indians by treaty.
There is a replica stockade beside the creek that is a near perfect reproduction of the original where the trespassers were staying when Custer arrived.
From the CG, northwest along the side road one can see the actual location where gold was first discovered in the Black Hills. There is speculation as to whether the settlers had already found the gold or did Custer's group found it.
There is some granite peaks close by that still have name and date(s) that were carved by Custer. I do love history!

The restaurant has the best breakfasts we found in the area (anywhere!) during the two summers we hosted at CSP. The meals are huge and the prices the best around. Get there early, because it fills up early. Pancakes and sausage were our favorites
