Custer State Park Fire

Just an FYI. Custer State Park in The Black Hills of South Dakota which is about 72000 acres is on fire. The strong winds took a tree limb down which brought down a power line at the intersection of US Hwy 16 A and Needles Hwy. The fire which started on Mon and is only 10% contained has already burned about 45000 acres more than half the park. No structures have yet burned. The fire has gone east crossing the Wild Life Loop Rd closing Hwy 79 between the towns of Hermosa and Hot Springs. State Game Lodge Blue Bell Lodge and Legon Lake Lodge have all been sparred. The entire park is closed. More information is available on the Rapid City Journals web site as well as the local televisions web sites such as Black Hills Fox News.

So sad. It is one of my favorite parks (I have always thought it should be a national park) and in fact we just spent a couple of weeks there this past summer. I just hope it was not caused by a careless idiot.

I agree...so sad to read this. This too is also one of our favorite parks. The wildlife loop is magnificent. This is a bad time of year for the wildlife to have the ecosystem imbalanced. Going to be tough on the critters as well as the local folks.

Here's a map of the fire. It's now 50% contained.

Zoom out to South Dakota. I was on the fire when I did the 'clicky' but it didn't take it. Sorry.

Been there quite a few times as my wife is from S.D. We were there two years ago. Rode through the park and Needles Highway on 2 wheels.

It will take years to recover, but it will. Just ask those that have been to Yellowstone N.P. Very very bad fires in 1988.

fire has gotten south, outside the park now. Still west of the Hermosa - Buffalo Gap road. As of this AM it was 58 K acres. Looks like about half of the burros are going to be missing but they are not sure. As of right now, the burros may be the only casualties. I am wondering if the fire ran them up against a fence and they could not retreat any further.
I has also gotten into Wind Cave Nat Park and into some private lands. There was some snow and it slowed it down but still going.
