Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, And Crazy Horse

We have a 37' Class A plus toad looking for a place to camp in or near Custer State Park. The weather is going to be in the high 90's so would appreciate 50a service. Anyone with experience at Game Lodge? Alternatives?? Independent parks just outside of CSP? We will be arriving from the east through Rapid City. There are some tunnel issues, correct?

Two votes for J Bar. KOA is nice but geared towards family with kids lot of kid activities. Both are on opposite side of Rushmore from Rapid City but very close.

We stayed in Custer with our 40ft MH. I can't remember which spot but it was the one behind the stables. Great spot. Easy trips in the area

Crazy Horse RV park just outside Custer, SD. It is atop a mountain so stay cooler than down in town.
It's nothing fancy if what you want to do is stay there all day, but we were only at the MH at night, sightseeing all day. We had a 40' 5er then, and were parked up next to the entrance.
look it up with Google Earth before deciding.

We have stayed at the KOA Mt. Rushmore. It was more geared towards kids and entertaining than I care for.

Custer Gulch Campground is at the Entrance to the Park. It is convenient to Rushmore. Large sites, good folks.

within the state park, Game Lodge is one of the best campgrounds. I also like the Stockade Lake campgrounds within the park.
Outside the park you have a wide variety of commercial RV parks, some in open fields (hot) , some on terraced hillsides, some in thick pine forest; depends on your personal preferences. The higher elevations & sites with shade trees make things a lot cooler when its 90 down in Rapid City..

There are narrow & low clearance tunnels on the Needles hiway (87), and the Iron Mountain Road section of 16A(Custer to Keystone), it also makes two 360 degree loop turns; fun on my Harley but not in the MH. neither is part of the normal approach route to Custer, unless you make a wrong turn. Both are worth driving in your towed, besides the tunnels & sharp turns, watch out for the herd of donkeys, they're very good at forcing traffic to stop and begging for a handout.

Here's some information on the tunnels if you haven't seen the state park's web site:

We made it from Mt. Rushmore to Custer SP on Alt. 16 and went through the tunnel's in our 36' Holiday Rambler Vacationer! I was very tight, and you could not get out if needed when in the tunnel! The antenna was scraping the top of the tunnel all the way through too, to make it seem that much tighter!
Had about 1" to 2" clearance on each side of the mirror's too! We did it at dusk, so made it that much more scary!!! Here are the pic's! I would not do it again, but glad I did it now that it is over! We stayed in Custer SP.
The 2nd and 3rd pic's were taken from inside the tunnel, with Mt. Rushmore lit up in the distance! Sorry for the poor quality, but did not have a lot of time to adjust!

Well...I tried to follow the example of Twogypsies and travel without plans. I got burned this time. I could neither get into Game Lodge nor Rafter J. In fact I tried several CG's before scoring at Custer Gultch. It looks good on on my iPad. I will report back when I give them a try. The staff seemed real nice on the phone.

The only problem is that there isn't any cable, and they say that I won't get a signal with my Sat Dish (roof mounted). So, in order to watch the final game of the Stanley Cup I will have to stake my claim on the TV in the rec room...which I will.

I have to pay better attention to the successes of Twogypsies.

Thanks again everyone !

Happy Fathers to all of you dads out there.
