Dead Horse Ranch State Park- Arizona

We are here now and spending our last night here (5 nights). This is a very nice campground and we have really enjoyed this location. It is only a short 20 mile drive to Sedona; Oak Creek Canyon goes for 12 miles or so after that. Jerome (old copper mining town) is a very short drive also. We drove to Prescott today (for just because) and filled up on gas at the Costco and bought a few groceries.

The sites are a nice size and we have water and electric hookups. There is a dump station at the entrance for people coming and going. Our loop offers toilets and showers which we have been using as well.

Nope. This is a terrible Arizona State Park. Wild wilderbeasts making noises all night. During the day, the hunting Pterosaurs seem to be drawn by the odor of the dead horse - screeching constantly overhead. Terrible hiking and Mountain Bike riding. And while sure, Clarksdale does have a good Mexican Restaurant - it's kind of sad riding by and seeing the Indian Running on the way in for a meal.

Yep, nothing to see here... No reason for anyone to want to wander in that direction...

Best to all, hope not to see you there,
Smitty

(OP. Did no one in the park come and give you the secret handshake required to return? Obvious breakdown has occurred. Perhaps ask an Admin to delete your post!)

Stayed there for a week two summers ago and it was GREAT! Easy to get to every thing. Only problem for us was the temp never went below 100 (day or night).

I should add that week was some of the worst heat ever for the area and in Phoenix the temp was above 120 and even the airport closed for a couple of days. So I guess we were in the "cool" part of the state.

.

Daytime of 100 is not unusual here in summer, but we usually cool down nicely at night. Momdoc must have hit pretty unusual weather. I'll add that the horse riding concession at DHRSP is terrific too, and still run by the grandson of the original owner of the ranch.

The screeching of the wilderbeest wouldn't bother me, but the smell of the dead horse would definitely be a turnoff. I'll try to stay away and recommend that others do also.

Friends stayed there, we were at Rain Spirit, just a bit farther towards Jerome. We tried to drop in and say hi, but no such luck without a day use fee! Turns out after we refused and left, we passed them in Clarkdale!

We hit during the record setting heat wave two years ago.

We would definitely stay here again! But please do not tell anyone. The April weather was lovely except for some strong winds and in the upper 80's and lower 90's for two of the days. But, we did day trips so it really did not matter. I appreciate members telling about this campground!
