Dodge City KS
We are going to be driving thru Dodge City in late June or early July. I want to stop and visit Boot Hill and DW wants to go to the casino. But she has been hearing that it may not be the safest place to spend much time in. We were planing on maybe 2 nights - get there and spend the night, do our looking around and back to campground and leave next morning. Anyone have an experience - good or bad - in Dodge City?

Been a number of years since been there but don't think Dodge is any worse than any other city. There was a fairly nice CG just past Boot Hill (maybe a mile or so) on the same side of the street at that time. Stayed there a couple of days as i remmeber

Great place to visit, very interesting things to see. We stayed at the Gunsmoke campground and took the little tour bus offered downtown. It was well worth it. I never heard there was anything dangerous in Dodge city. I think Wyatt Earp did a pretty good job cleaning up the town.

Thanks for the replies. I figured it was the case of one bad experience that has been expanded upon until it has grown to be major problem.

Also check this month's edition of Good Sam's Highways magazine. They have an extensive article on Kansas and some backroad stops.

We stayed at Gunsmoke RV Park in the summer of '08. Couldn't do much sightseeing at the time. Roadwork on the main drag and most of it was dug out to about the three foot deep level when we were there. Go figure!
