Doris Campground, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (SW Oklahoma)

Doris Campground, inside the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge just outside Lawton, Oklahoma

We just stayed the weekend in our local wildlife refuge for the first time and I think it's our new favorite spot! They have nice paved and level sites with almost unbeatable shade. It's maintained very well, it's on federal property with Federal Wildlife Officers patrolling throughout the day and night. 23 sites with 20/30/50amp hookups, and 47 sites without electric. (Many more primitive camping sites too!)

There's no water at campsites but there are several shower shelters and water hookup sites throughout and a dump station near the exit.

By far the greatest part is the wildlife. This in right near the middle of the wildlife refuge in a small forested section but surrounded by open grassland with grazing bison/elk/deer/turkeys. I've seen bison in the adjacent fields but have heard of an occasional visit inside the campground.

We spent the weekend hanging out at the trailer after long hikes, with several wild turkeys and deer (all doe) sleeping around our trailer. They did not bother us or act aggressively at all, just ignored us and lounged around us comfortably without any appearance of begging for food.

We have camped there numerous times and we always enjoyed the time spent there. Plenty of hiking trails, a wonderful interpretive center and plenty of wildlife wondering thru the park to keep you interested. Great place and I highly recommend staying there.

We camped there a lot when we lived in Lawton, OK. Our favorite memory is when a herd of bison came wandering through the campground as we woke up one morning.

Has anyone stayed there during January or February? We will be visiting Cameron University in Lawton for a basketball game!

I love about an hour away. It's chilly and a little windy around then. This past year Feb was a very mild upper 40's and 50's but it was a very mild winter.

We usually stayed at Lake Lawtonka nearby in the city RV park or a nice private RV park across the highway. I think we'll be shifting toward Doris Campground from here on out

We did stay in the Lake Lawtonka RV park last year in December and it was frigid cold in the teens! Good test for our motorhome in cold weather and it did fine... we just need to add a lit lightbulb in lower belly of waste connections. Grey water feeder tube/pipe did freeze.

The City RV park is wide open with nothing to break the wind. It sounds as if Doris CG has some tree barriers. Hope the continued mild weather holds for 2018!
