Staff, their benefits, and costs in general are higher and going up... I pay more than that in property taxes a month at my house and don't live on a waterfront property... nor do I get my trash taken away, or have free water or sewer... $30/night seems like a bargain to me. Maybe I'll move to Tennesse.

Maybe not, but that doesn't make it right.

My own experience in campgrounds is that there is a lot of trust extended to campers by campground operators (both government and private operations) and by other campers. Unfortunately that trust is abused on a regular basis. Everything from booking sites under numerous names to get around length of stay limitations, to not picking up after their dogs. I could go on, but I won't.

So in looking at places like that on the east coast... so far... I've been locked out of every state park for the entire summer. I've looked from Mass to Virginia... What about the coast of Maine? I'm looking at options there on my Great Northeast Adventure of 2014 (family in Troy / Saratoga - I've lived in TN for the past 20+ years). That should fit the bill for you. I found a bunch of "on the beach" sites (water and power, but no sewer)... apparently I didn't bookmark them Off to search again....

Another thing we discovered when traveling to Florida this past winter. Even though the reservation sites show the campground as all booked, they often have a block of sites that are for walk-up availability. These sites are first-come, first-serve.

We got into some great parks just by calling an hour or so before we got there to make sure they still had the site open. I hate making reservations...lol. We love being spontaneous and traveling aimlessly around stopping when we feel like it. :-)

I don't have much experience on the Northeast coast area. We mostly hang out either in the TN/NC mountains or the Southeast.

Must be nice! I don't have the luxury of not planning my destination or just being spontaneous as I get a couple of vacations a year and don't want to count on making a call an hour before I arrive... different strokes for different folks! Maybe some day!

As a matter of fact... our one planned vacation so far this year (beside my trip at the end of this week to Hilton Head Motorcoach Resort), is to Bar Harbor Maine... Staying at Dessert II (?) just off the island in Trenton. Premier waterfront site in a "so so" CG is $92 night... bar Harbor CG is supposed to be nice and reasonably priced, but they don't take reservations.. To me, although pricy (comparatively speaking), is worth knowing I have a nice site with a waterfront view waiting for me when I get there...

For your Great NE Adventure, you may want to check out Lake George. There is a great cg there. Saratoga is a very nice town and one of the few in upstate NY that is growing.
