I'm looking for a CG between Durango and Mesa Verde that might be best suited for a couple of boys, aged 10 and 13. We want to visit M-V and ride the train to Silverton, among other things. Fishing would be a plus, along with all the usual outdoor stuff for boys that age...some things to keep these little guys out of Grampa's hair for a few hours. Is Lightner about the best one out there?

Bob, Try Alpen Rose RV Park in Durango Colorado. Phone # (877) 259-5791. I've stayed there several times. It's just outside of town and is a beautiful campground. The train to Silverton runs past there daily.

Yeah, thanks Sammie. I stayed there last summer and did like it. But this time with these two kids...I'm not sure there is a lot for them to do there. I'm wondering if some other place is better-suited? Maybe other CG's would work better? Also, it's location is a looooong way to Mesa Verde, methinks.

http://www.timberman.com/PARKS/FunValley/FUNVAL.htmBob, here is a campground near South Fork Colorado. You will find tons of activities for the kids. The only problem is that its a couple of hours drive to Mesa Verde.
Sammie

As I recall, there are no CGs between Durango and MV, except right close to MV itself. We stayed at the Mesa Verde RV "Resort" for a month last summer and it was ok. It was about 1/2 mile from the entrance to MV. It does have a pool and hot tub. I used to drive into Durango (37 miles) fairly frequently as past of my sight-seeing routine. The drive is easy and very pretty.

I remember seeing a park in Dolores, should be pretty close. Have not stayed there but I recall that it is on the river.

It's Dolores River RV Park and is owned by the same owners as own the Mesa Verde RV Resort. In both cases, the word "resort" is used extremely liberally!

Yes, check out Lightner Creek as it should have more activities for the boys. Priest Gulch is a BEAUTIFUL campground near Dolores, however, that's quite a drive as well to Durango if you planned to do it more than once during your stay. We've spent a lot of time in that general area & love it!!

We love Priest Gulch! It may be difficult to get reservations this late but certainly worth the wait. At least all the long drives are beautiful in Colorado.
