DW an I will be staying at lakeside Park, elephant butte, NM Jan-April, 2009. Any comments, advice would be appreciated. One major concern is that our dogs will have some safety issues with eight types of rattle snakes---so we are told
Thanks in advance, Maverik

Maverik,

Lakeside RV Park is the best in the area, a very nice facility. As for our slithering friends, they are very temperature sensitive and their activity varies with the seasons. Dec to Mar is usually too cool for most snakes in this area to be very active. They normally start coming out and getting more active around mid March to early April, depending on temps. During the hotter summer months they seek shade for cooling during daytime and are most active after sunset. If its too big to swallow whole, they have little interest, except when threatened. The snakes tend to avoid most areas where humans and their pets are frequently active, unless rodents & smaller animals frequent that same area. If you find yourself walking your dog in an area with lots of small mice, rats, squirrels, rabbits; then you've placed yourself in the middle of the snakes favotite dinner buffet. If you're a responsible dog owner and keep your dog under control, under your supervision and use some common sense, its not in much danger. But if bitten get it to a vet quickly.
