Eureka Campground, Silverton, CO

Headed there in a couple of weeks for a week of 4-wheelin' fun, camping at the Eureka townsite. Any advice from people who have been there? We are planning a day for the Durango-Silverton Railroad.

Sounds like a great trip, Silverton is a beautiful area. I suggest you take a mix of cold and warm weather gear, the potential for possible winter like conditions is definitely credible.

The train ride is a great day trip. Not sure how they do it these days, but 24 years ago (last time the DW and I did it) you had the option of riding the train one direction and getting shuttled back to where you got on Durango or Silverton. The other option (which we did, departed Durango to Silverton and back to Durango) was to ride the train out and back, which made for a very long day.

The road out of Silverton to Durango is down to one lane for a few hundred yards, expect some delays if you head that way.

Take a ride up to Kendall Mountain (six miles up to 13,000 feet and some change) on the ATV's if you have time, beautiful views up there.

Check out the Animas Fork old mining town as you work your way towards California Gulch & Hurricane Pass. Neat slice of the old...

We thoroughly enjoyed the Mining Museum (Jail too!), they've done a great job on the exhibits.

Hard to go wrong, heading in any direction!
Enjoy,
Smitty
