Falling Waters - Frank Lloyd Wright

I'm looking to do a shake down March trip to Frand Lloyd Wright's Falling Waters house in western PA.

Has anyone been there and is there a recommended campground that is close by?

Been their but did not stay in local area. Passed many campgrounds after off of turnpike on the way to Falling Waters. We stayed quite a distance away in Harrisville.
Don't forget FLW other house Kentuck Knob which is not far from Falling Waters. You can see both in a day.

Not much open that early in the season, I know none of the state parks are. You might try the Jellystone Park located right there in Mill Run. At least they show camping rates for Jan-May (half the price of summer rates!). We haven't stayed there, but checked it out when we were in the area one time. It was summer, so it was "kid-city", but when you'll be there in March, it should be quiet. I even doubt you'd need reservations, who else would be there that time of year?

While you're in the area, stop by the Flt 93 Memorial, about an hour away.

We did Falling Waters and Kentuck Knob a few years ago. Stayed at the Jellystone park. Sites are back-to-back. Not a lot of space, but if you're there pre-season, should be quieter.

It's probably the closest park to Falling Waters which you can get your coach into with hook-ups.

Ohiopyle state park is listed as being open from March to Dec. Stayed there 2 years ago. There are about 200 sites, but only about 30 have electric. Be warned, the main road to get to the campground is very steep. There is another route for large RV's printed on website There are only a few campsites for larger RV's that have electric service. PM me if you want the site #'s.

Seven Springs Ski Resort is not too far from Falling Water. SS used to have a limited number of RV parking in their parking lot behind the lodge. You could call and see. It's a great place to visit. Your not too far from the 9/11 flight 53 memorial in Shanksville either. Everyone should visit that.

Years ago (10) 7 Springs had about 10-15 RV parking spots with electric hook-up right next to the convention hall in the main parking lot. About 10 years ago they moved the RV parking to an outer parking lot that has a downhill entrance. Not sure if it is still available.....I checked on their website but didn't see anything.... Since you have kids they might like the tubing hill at 7-Springs....The skiing will stay open usually till the first week in April.....

One word about the road to 7-Springs. Coming in from the west, it is a 7 mile climb up a rather narrow road. The elevation gain is about 1500 feet. They keep it plowed well, but a large RV will be tested on the one long hill section. When we take a trip there thru our ski club, if we have a full bus of skiers and a older bus were down to 15 MPH on the last hill section... If your camping at another location, 7 Springs would make a nice fun day for your kids. They have a cool gameroom, bowling alley, indoor mini golf...The Sunday Brunch is yummy.....The hotel is fun to just walk around...They have 4-5 restaurants. pizza shop...shopping...3-4 bars/ lounges...Go-ta check out the Foggy-Goggle lounge

If you don't mind a little road trip there is Rocky Gap State Park in Maryland. We made a trip to Fallingwater from there and it was a nice 3/4 day trip. Cumberland, MD is close by to the park which has the C&O Canal running through it (outskirts). Believe there is also a steam engine that stages out of there and makes a short trip to PA and back. Please double check these facts especially for this time of the year. We usually visit in late spring/early summer.

The train at Cumberland is The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad | Allegany County, Western Maryland. It runs from Cumberland to Frostburg, MD- a distance of approximately 13 miles and the majority of the trip is uphill. For the best views, you want to sit on the right side of the train as it leaves the station for Frostburg.



In the above picture is Western Maryland Scenic RR's #734 Baldwin Consolidation 2-8-0 and #501 Diesel (a GEEP of some flavor) at the station in Cumberland MD. The trains are kept across the Potomac River in West Virginia. The diesel pulls the steam locomotive and its consist from WV to the station in Cumberland. This is done to reduce smoke/emissions from the steam loco as it passes through residential areas along the way. The diesel is then uncoupled and the trip to Frostnirg and back is made using steam power only.

At Frostburg, the locomotive is turned around using a turntable. If you've never seen this done, it's interesting to watch.

We actually took the trip last weekend.

Took the indepth tour of Falling Waters (about 2 hours) which was well worth that extra cost. After taking about 100 pictures, we had lunch in the very nice cafe at the visitor center.

We then visited Kentuck Knob which is another Wright house about 20 minutes away and also hiked to Cucumber Falls. Although the day was sunny, if was still too cold to enjoy any whitewater rafting or biking at Ohiopyle.

We camped at Yogi Bear which is going through some extensive renovations.

At Falling Waters, was there any construction going on? When we were there last many years ago, they were under going many updates to the home.....Would like to go back for the in-depth tour.

No major construction at Falling Waters. Some maintenance to the cement work.
