Favorite Illinois campgrounds?

Ok, ok i know that Illinois is probably the most corrupt state in the union...that being said, I'm sure we have some lovely campgrounds out there. We are primarily taking long 3-4 day vacations this summer instead of a biggie. What are your favorite Illinois weekend campgrounds? We are staying at Jim Edgar/Panther Creek for Father;s day weekend...close to oldest son.

Is probably the most corrupt state????? Is the most would be more like it.

I understand that Panther Creek has full hook-ups.

My wife and I do a lot of camping at Camp Lakewood in Effingham. Full hook up with cable, wi-fi, Good Sam discount, ecscort to site, and some of the nicest owners you will ever meet. As a matter of fact, we will be there for the 4th of July weekend.

Bo Woods is a Army Core campground just south of Sullivan. They do have some full hook-up sites.

In the Champaign/Urbana Mahomet area, there are two. One is Tin Cup Campground, and the other is Champaign Sportsman Club in Mahomet.

In LeRoy, there is Morain View State Park.

In Danville there is Kickapoo State Park.

We have camped at some others that I don't think are very nice. I really don't like to discourage people from going someplace because we don't like it. Kentuckiana in Hopedale is one. Very narrow sites, short sites, too. If somebody in a motorhome has their awning out, and parked on the end, they may have to put their awning up so you can get around the corner. The sites are so short that if you have a 30 foot trailer, and somebody is parked either behind or in front of you, good luck on getting your unit square in the site. This campground isn't made for bigger units.

Good luck on your search. We may see you around sometime.

Bucksmom,

Our favorite is Prarie Pines in Rantoul. We use this as a one night stopping spot on the way to or from western activities since it's a one day drive from Lexington. This was originally the trailer park for servicemen at the big Rantoul Air Force base and is now owned by the town of Rantoul. There are no real site boundaries; rather 96 36 x 100 ft areas in a park like setting with full hookups. It's like parking among trees on a big lawn. The access roads are fully paved and were the streets of the former trailer park. They have a bathhouse, laundry, and WiFi but no other amenities. If you don't need a pool, miniature golf, or other such things, this would be a great place for a multi day stay. Last years rates in the Trailer Life guidebook: $25.00. The only other thing is that they shut down for a week in the late summer for a parachute jumper's convention. I think this is around labor day, but call to be sure.

These are both nice RV parks about 65 miles NW of Chicago.

Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort

Close to I-90 and easy to find. They should have their thirty 70-100 foot, 50 amp sites finished by now.

Sycamore RV Resort :: Enjoy an Illinois Lakeside Camping Vacation!

Easy access from I-88. The entrance is a bit tricky to find so ask directions. There are 2 spring fed lakes for fishing.

FlyRFD

This isn't an RV park but if you are in the Rockford, IL area around June it's worth the trip. They have a package deal for the airshow and weekend stay at the RV park. There are no hook-ups however but you will have the best seats in the house for the show. It's best to get reservations since space is limited. We stopped going to the Chicago Airshow for this one.

We just got home from Wolf Creek campground near Shelbyville Lake, we also like Comlara at Evergreen Lake north of Bloomington/Normal and we stayed two weeks at Eldon Hazlet State Park on Lake Carlyle this summer.
