We were at Calloway at the end of March this past spring. The azaleas were supposed to have been approaching their peak at that time, but since the winter of 2011-2012 was so mild, most of the azaleas were done blooming. In fact, a rain storm during our stay completely demolished the few blooms that remained.
We had the exact opposite experience another year at Bellingrath Gardens in Alabama. The azaleas were supposed to be near their peak when we were there, but the previous winter was so cold, the flowers had barely started to open.
The point is, you can look at the average peak bloom dates, but you don't really know what the real peak will be until a few weeks before.
We stayed at FDR when we were at Calloway. You can make reservations, but they are not site specific. You can, however, reserve a certain size site, so make sure you reserve one that is big enough for your RV.
Not all sites are suitable for big rigs. Big RVs can't fit into the smaller sites, but people with smaller RVs frequently reserve bigger sites. That further limits your choice of sites once you get there, so I would advise trying to arrive early in the week for a better selection of sites.
If we ever go back to Calloway, we will probably stay in the new section of Pine Mountain RV Resort even though it is more expensive than FDR. Pine Mountain Resort is also closer to the entrance of Calloway.
